She plays Sally, who gets to know Carl (David Morrissey), who is married to Maggie (Colman) on their daily commuter train and begins an affair with him, despite being engaged to Ryan (Sean Maguire).

Asked about taking Olivia’s husband in the programme, she said: “I do. It’s like Brief Encounter, we meet on a train. There’s lots of twists and turns and your heartstrings are pulled both ways.

“It was amazing to work with Olivia, who I’m a huge fan of, and David I’m a big fan of, and Sean Maguire who plays my partner is brilliant in it as well.”

She went on: “That’s out in January and it’s a little bit saucy as well, so I’m wondering what people will make of it. I’m excited for that to come out.”

Sheridan recently went to the International Emmy Awards in New York where she was nominated for best actress for her role as Charmian Biggs in the ITV drama Mrs Biggs and said she still couldn’t believe her luck.

“I couldn’t believe I got to go to New York and glam up and do the red carpet out there, it was really lovely,” she said.

“It was freezing cold but it was lovely to be in a room amongst all the world’s best talent so it was a real honour, but it’s nice to be back home again. Lovely for a few days, but it’s good to be back.”
