The nurses of Nonnatus House are back for a new series of Call The Midwife.

Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter)

The most experienced midwife at Nonnatus House, Sister Julienne is the consistent stalwart among the midwives.

Jenny was 18 when she played Roberta in the film of The Railway Children. Since then she’s won a Bafta for her performance as Jill Mason in the 1977 film Eqqus and played Tessa Phillips in Spooks.

Sister Ursula (Dame Harriet Walter)

Joining the nuns for series six is Sister Ursula – a nun described as a “not very welcome addition” to the midwifery team.

Dame Harriet Walter is an accomplished star of the big and small screens, starring in Atonement, Sense and Sensibility, Downton Abbey, Little Dorrit and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Nurse Barbara Gilbert (Charlotte Ritchie)

Barbara is now an established face at Nonnatus House and is good friends with Trixie – despite becoming engaged to her ex-fiancé Tom.

Comedy fans will recognise Charlotte as Oregon from Channel 4’s Fresh Meat and Hannah from BBC Three’s Siblings.

Shelagh Turner (Laura Main)

Former nun Shelagh left Nonnatus House when she fell in love with and married Dr Patrick Turner, but missed the life at the convent and returned in series four to help out.

Laura first appeared on the stage at the age of 11 in a stage production of The Sound Of Music. As well as a lengthy career in theatre, she featured as DC Alison Bain in ITV’s Murder City.

Nurse Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett)

Officious Phyllis is not afraid to put ideas forward to try improve the lives of those at Nonnatus House.

Linda played Julia Roberts’ mother in the film Mary Reilly, and was nominated for a Bafta for her performance as Ella Khan in East Is East. Past TV credits include BBC period dramas Sense and Sensibility and Lark Rise to Candleford, and in recent years she’s starred in Calendar Girls and The Reader.

Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt)

Dementia-suffering Monica has retired from midwifery. She is the beloved mentor of all in Nonnatus House.

In an epic career that has spanned over 50 years, Judy has been twice nominated for a Bafta: for her performances as Maria Thins in Girl With A Pearl Earring and Mildred Layton in The Jewel In The Crown.

Sister Mary Cynthia (Bryony Hannah)

Sister Mary returned to Nonnatus House in series four after completing her religious training. She remains Trixie’s closest friend, and is active in supporting her rehabilitation. She suffered a vicious attack in series five and is still recovering.

Bryony made her name in theatre and gained an Olivier award nomination for her performance in The Children’s Hour. She was starring in the BBC Three sitcom Dead Boss at the same time as when Call The Midwife first broke out.

Nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George)

Trixie turned to drink after breaking off her engagement to Tom in series four when he was relocated to Newcastle. Series five saw him begin a relationship with Barbara, and much to her angst Trixie gave the pair her blessing.

Helen has starred in Call the Midwife from the beginning, but also came sixth in the 2015 series of Strictly Come Dancing.

Nurse Patsy Mount (Emerald Fennell)

Trixie’s roommate, the bright and brilliant Patsy, has long been in a secret relationship with fellow nurse Delia. She’s faced with a dilemma in series six when a letter from Hong Kong brings news of her father.

Emerald Fennell has popped up in a number of TV productions including Channel 4 comedy Chickens (with Simon Bird, Joe Thomas and Jonny Sweet), and also had roles in films such as Anna Karenina and Albert Nobbs.

Dr Patrick Turner (Stephen McGann)

Dr Turner is Poplar’s physician, who helps at the convent and is married to Shelagh.

Stephen has a close relationship with his character in Call the Midwife, having studied for a Masters degree in Science Communication. Last year he published an essay in the journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. He’ll be known to soap opera viewers as Sean Reynolds from Emmerdale, and is married to Call the Midwife screenwriter Heidi Thomas.

Fred Buckle (Cliff Parisi)

Widowed Fred is the likeable handyman at Nonnatus House. He fell in love with, and eventually married, shop owner Violet at the end of series four.

Cliff spent eight years in Eastenders playing the role of Rick ‘Minty’ Peterson. Since leaving Albert Square in 2010, he has juggled his time between Call The Midwife and appearances in series including Outnumbered and Hustle.

Sister Winifred (Victoria Yeates)

After living most of her life in the countryside, Sister Winifred came to Nonnatus House as quite an innocent young woman. Over the past few series she has grown in confidence.

Victoria joined the cast of Call the Midwife for the drama’s third series in 2014. Prior to starring in the show, she had taken on small roles in Lip Service and Holby City.

Sgt. Peter Noakes (Ben Caplan)

Police officer Peter Noakes, who was promoted to Sergeant at the beginning of series four, takes his work very seriously and is a devoted husband and father to Camilla (Miranda Hart) and son Freddie.

A Call the Midwife cast original, Ben Caplan is also recognisable for his roles in Band of Brothers, The Passion, The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies and most recently, BBC drama New Blood.

Rev. Tom Hereward (Jack Ashton)

The dashing vicar made quite the impression on Trixie and the pair soon embarked on a relationship and became engaged in series four. However, after she broke it off, Tom started dating Trixie’s colleague Barbara Gilbert. The pair became engaged during a trip to South Africa – will they set a date for the wedding in series six?

Jack Ashton joined the cast during series three and has previously starred in an episode of Broadchurch, Vicious and Holby City.

Call the Midwife is a BBC drama series about a group of midwives working in the east end of London in the 1950s and 1960s.

They are based at the fictional nursing convent Nonnatus House in Poplar district carrying out nursing and midwife duties.

The show is based on the memoirs of the same name by Jennifer Worth.
