Here is our take on the upcoming Marvel movie.

In the run up to it’s release, public opinion seemed to put Ant-Man in the same boat as Marvel’s 2014 hit Guardians of the Galaxy. The general thoughts being that it is either going to be a hit at the Box Office or a flop. Since the departure of Edgar Wright from the project, fans have been undecided as to the success of Marvel’s smallest hero on the big screen.

But it would seem that Marvel again. Wrights script with Peyton Reed’s direction and stellar performances from Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lily make up an excellent formula. Then throw in Corey Stoll’s crazy scientist Darren Cross/Yellow Jacket and you’re set for one hell of a good time.

We are provided with an easy to follow storyline that provides all the emotion and drama we could want. Ex-Robber….sorry ex-burglar, turned honest man, given a chance at redemption and a chance to become to hero that his young daughter already believes him to be. A scientist who wants to protect the technology he developed from those that want to use it for power and destruction, while trying to rebuild his relationship with his estranged daughter and said scientists protégée who wants the technology to sell to those who want to use it for power and destruction. As far as storylines go it’s an oldie but a goody.

In keeping with Marvel’s style at the moment, it is very much light hearted. A lot of comedy is played out over the course of the film, much more so probably, than any of the other MCU productions previously. Possibly a little more than audiences may be expecting could be a concern when it comes to their expectations of the film. Alternatively it could be Marvel playing along with the weird nature of Ant-Man’s, name, abilities and powers, something seen briefly in a trailer but didn’t make the final cut of the film. What ever their reasoning, you’re not short of a giggle and a guffaw along the way.

Like most films of this genre, it is very effects heavy. Let’s be honest, it is kind of hard to pull off a character shrinking in size and riding on the back of a flying ant in any live action style. However with the premise of the film, it does make the final fight sequence all the more entertaining. It is a massive battle with a plentiful amount of explosions and lasers galore, all taking place on a tiny scale.

They took the Avengers battle for Manhattan, shrunk it down to two square feet of table top and threw in a giant size Thomas the Tank Engine for good measure.

The film would not be complete without a couple of references and cameo appearances to reaffirm Ant-Man’s place in the saga of the MCU. They don’t so much hint but put it right in front of the you the potential for a new hero (or heroine) to buzz into the spotlight soon and also putting Falcon through an encounter he isn’t going to be forgetting about anytime soon.

The overuse of comedy aside, Ant-Man looks set to have comfortable journey through it’s time on the big screen as well as having taught us all a few things along the way. 1) Size doesn’t matter, 2) Be nice to ants, apparently they’re rather helpful when you’re in a tight spot and most importantly 3) Baskin
