The Hobbit Battle of the Five Armies Review

This is the final chapter is upon us. The Hobbit Battle of the Five Armies could be the Blu-ray or DVD to complete your, but how does it stand up to the rest of the Tolkien stories?

Of course one of the biggest attractions of this box set is the extended scenes. These include even more Legolas, Bifur and his axe head and a deeper interrogation of Gandolf.

The Hobbit Battle of the Five Armies

Watching these added a lot of depth to some of the existing story that was captured in the original feature. Even if you don’t notice what is considered as part of these extra, you can definitely experience Bilbo’s sadness as he stares upon the friends he has lost across this epic journey.

Also included in the two other bonus disks are special behind the scenes footage. These range from on location shoots, Wacky Wheels of Wonder and the challenges that comes with making a film of this scale. Even down to discussing the iconic battle Jackson admits to not starting to plan until being on set. Parts like these display the resourcefulness of pulling some of the crew as extras or leaving others on the side of a mountain for a night!

If you are worried about the lack of Benedict Cumberbatch, panics not; some of these amazing extras include Cumberbatch recite ‘Black Speech’ backwards which is rather entertaining. They describe the range this actor has and behind the scene footage is where it is most evident.

The only down side to this is the time it takes to watch everything here. Obviously for any Tolken fans this can be done with ease, 11 hours can be a good day to grab some munch and nerd out with some friends. For those who might need some convincing you will be glad to know that you can break these down into their chapters so it is not impossible to separate this across a week or two.

Another little delight is the spontaneous laughter from people such as Stephen Fry, Cate Blanchett, Martin Freeman and Ian McKellen. Heck we even get chance to see Wieners Wacky Wheel of Wonders: a prize wheel made on set designed to maintain moral but also hints just how amazing this cast worked together.

Overall this DVD does contain some amazing extras that could be considered better than the film in some places.

For any Tolkien fan this is a must have. To be able to see the cast and crew on the own journey to film this epic conclusion.

The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies Extended Edition is out now on Amazon.
