The Iris Prize, Cardiff’s International LGBT Short Film Prize opens its tenth anniversary on Wednesday 12th October with a wide variety of film premieres, onstage interviews and live performance. It begins at 1800 with a preview of the Iris & Me retrospective exhibition, curating Cardiff-based photographer Jon Pountney’s visual record of all the Iris Production films made by past eight winners, accompanied by a specially created audio-visual experience with soundscapes and projections that will play daily.

The events continue at 1930 in Cineworld Cardiff, with a special chat show hosted by TV presenter Angharad Mair, who will be interviewing filmmakers and members of the Iris jury, including this year’s Jury Chair ground-breaking US filmmaker Cheryl Dunye; Iris Director Berwyn Rowlands; Iris Chair and journalist Andrew Pierce; past winning directors Charlie Francis from Scotland, Till Kleinhert from Germany, and Magnus Mork from Norway, as well as the cast from new zombie film, Kill Pill.  A live performance from South Wales Gay Men’s Chorus leads into the screening of not one but four amazing short films.

These include the world premiere of short film KILL PILL, directed by Lloyd Eyre-Morgan. Cast members in attendance include Liam Boyle (TV’s Spooks, Land Girls), George Sampson (Britain’s Got Talent winner, Waterloo Road, Emmerdale) and Jo Woodcock (TV’s Land Girls, Death In Paradise), YouTube star Robin Armstrong and Shameless actor Jody Latham.

There’s also screenings of BAFTA Cymru-nominated Iris Prize production SPOILERS by Brendon McDonall, and WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN, which is written by Katie White and directed by Charlie Francis, the 2014 Iris Prize Best British winning team from Scotland. The programme is rounded out with another World Premiere, AFIACH, a new Welsh language short written by Bethan Marlow, directed by Carys Lewis and starring West End actress Gillian Elisa (Billy Elliott on stage; TV’s Stella; Gavin and Stacey). This is the first production from our Straeon Iris scheme.

The mysterious DIGGING UP THE PAST  film not only looks to the previous ten years of the Prize but also provides ominous hints to the future. The evening concludes with the Opening Night Party which is the Iris philosophy: Watch Films. Party Nightly. Repeat.
