The Oscars is one of the most prestigious movie award ceremonies in the world…even if Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t win Academy Award this year.

Epic historial drama, which starred Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o, was awarded the coveted statuette by Will Smith.

Brad Pitt and Steve McQueen lead the cast and crew of 12 Years a Slave

“This is an incredible honour,” said the film’s producer Brad Pitt. “I know I speak for everyone involved when I say that it has been an absolute privilege to work on Solomon’s story.

“One man brought us together to work on this story — Steve McQueen.”

The emotional British director then took to the microphone to say his thanks for the honour. “I dedicate this award to all the people who have endured slavery,” he said. “Everyone deserves not just to survive, but to live.”

Cate Blanchett and Matthew McConaughey

Cate Blanchett was named Best Actress for her role in Woody Allen’s movie Blue Jasmine and Dallas Buyers Club star Matthew McConaughey scooped the Oscar for Best Actor.

“Those who think films with women at the centre are niche: they are not,” stated Cate. “People want to see them and they make money”.

Father-of-three Matthew, who won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his role as HIV sufferer Ron Woodroof, paid tribute to his family during his acceptance speech.

Viewers were moved when Lupita Nyong’o was crowned Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her intense portrayal of Patsey in 12 Years a Slave.

“It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is due to so much pain in someone else’s,” said Lupita tearfully. “So I want to salute the spirit of Patsey, for her guidance.”

Lupita Nyong’o and Jared Leto

Having thanked the film’s cast and crew, 31-year-old Lupita moved audiences with her concluding statement, “No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”

Matthew’s Dallas Buyers Club co-star Jared Leto was crowed Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Angelina Jolie and Sidney Poitier presented Gravity mastermind Alfonso Cuarón with the Oscar for Best Director.
