Purdy open’s up about her background and career so far.

I grew up in a cottage with my brothers and sisters and only 2 bedrooms – my brother sometimes slept in a shed in the garden!! My father farmed the land surrounding our house which belonged to the late Ian Flemming (writer of the James Bond books). The fields provided the perfect backdrop for my imagination to run wild…

We watched a lot of old classic films, I always picked up on the hopeless romances in the sub plot. Gone with the Wind, Cary Grant films, Bacall & Bogart…anything with a lot of big stares, long pauses & sexy tension. Obviously not forgetting the Bond films!

I started writing songs aged 11, using two cassette players swapping tapes over to create harmonies with my voice. It’s taken time to discover my personal style but slowly the dots have joined & there are all these unconscious & conscious influences of my life revisiting me in my work. I can’t give up because I’m a hopeless romantic with an endless desire to express my feelings through music. Please let me know if you find a cure!

My influences include Nina Simone, Ella Peggy Lee, Henry Mancini, The Doors, Tarantino, Bond (can’t help describing my influences in film form sometimes), Paolo Nutini, Amy Winehouse, Rachel Yamagata, Damien Rice, Lauren Hill, Fleetwood Mack, Sia and Portishead etc. Rumour has it Buble likes one of my songs. I’d like to do a duet with him some day!

Her debut album ‘Diamond in the Dust’ set for release May 2015

Some of my proudest moments include my performance at Wembley this year singing the Remembrance song I wrote (with James Pearson of Ronnie Scott’s) with The Central Band of the Royal Airforce backing me & 95,000 watching. Then there was the surreal time I sang to Mick Jagger & Ronnie Wood at a concert and swapped one of my paintings for free tickets to his show at the 02! Last but not least, a promoter approached me at a charity theatre gig In my home town and asked if I’d sing at an event on Necker Island. I love adventures! But it wasn’t until I was actually on my way that I was told I’d be the opening act for Lana Del Ray which was amazing as I love her music and her lyrics.

Some of my songs are inspired by the visual beauty of paintings, so it was a wonderful surprise to be asked to sit for Jack Vettriano for four paintings, I really appreciate his support for my music and can’t wait to send him my album!

It was a pleasure to sing my new single at the London Lifestyle Awards and an honour to sing at the Palladium at the Royal Variety show with Simply Red this year!  My big dream is to write a Bond theme tune one day…   I feel incredibly fortunate to have had so many amazing experiences already. Some people may think it’s glamourous all the time but It’s taken a lot of hard work and perseverance and it’s a great sensation knowing I’m getting my music to a bigger audience…Thank you to everybody that’s played a part in my story so far……
