Radio 1 Big Weekend In Norwich Guide

This weekend Norwich is hosting some of the biggest artists in the world.

Fifty-thousand people are expected at Earlham Park, in the centre of the city, over the next two days.

East Anglia will see performances from Olly Murs, Taylor Swift, , Florence + The Machine, Snoop Dogg, Foo Fighters, Muse, Fall Out Boy and Imagine Dragons are also playing at Europe’s biggest free ticketed festival.

The first act on the main stage todayat 1pm is 5 Seconds of Summer, and on Sunday Olly Murs will get the crowd going, joined on stage by Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw.

Blue skies over the park today should see temperatures reach 15 or 16 degrees celsius, creeping up to about 19 degrees tomorrow when there could be some rain in the afternoon.

Ben Cooper, controller, BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, said: “This weekend the whole world will see Norwich host the biggest pop stars on the planet thanks to the great team work of the BBC, Norwich City Council and the University of East Anglia.”

Headliners Muse (on Saturday) and Foo Fighters (on Sunday) will perform to the whole crowd at about 10pm, when other stages close, to draw people to the main stage for a festival finale.

What will the artists be eating?
Mary Shelley Smith is in charge of catering and will oversee 300 breakfasts, 900 lunches and 1000 dinners for the likes of Years and Years, Olly Murs and Ella Eyre.
“We’re doing some special after show food for some of the bands,” she told us from a smoky kitchen.

Helen Selleck, Norwich City Council’s culture and events manager, said: “We hope everyone has the most amazing time.

“We’ll be capturing all the fun, as it happens, and tweeting from Earlham Park. Happy Big Weekend to one and all!”
