Scarlet Baxter Gig Review

Scarlet Baxter Gig Review – Amersham Arms – Sat 20th June

It’s a grey skied Saturday night & I’ve just set foot in, The Amersham Arms, in New Cross. It holds an ‘indie edgy’ vibe – everyone is casual and looks happy and relaxed.

It’s quite dark inside as I eye surf the crowd of dusky silhouettes in the back room, where I arrive just in time to see Scarlet and her band setting up.

As groups of guys with Paul Weller style and girls ‘rocking the chick look;’ slowly swivel past me with their pints and laid-back auras; most are chatting, but some stand side by-side, eyes focused on the stage, anticipating; holding their gaze through every sip….they stare on.

Displaying a desirable outline of a figure, wearing all black in a kind of, ‘shabby ‘n’ chic’ style and with Debbie Harry white blonde hair; Scarlet looks ready to perform.

“Come forward I wanna see you dance. And I wanna see your ugly faces.’

Bit surprised she can see any boats in here – the lighting is pretty dim apart from the ray of light beaming down on Scarlet’s face. She holds her hand up to her head like a face visor. I think she’s feeling the glare of the light; as well as the increasing crowd too.

Scarlet Baxter begins with ‘Dancing All Night.’ A sexy r and b track which shows off her sultry, caramel voice. Scarlet looks in control and in the words of Louis Walsh, ‘she’s owns that stage.’ Obviously comfortable in her own skin, Scarlet sexily swivels her curves and sways her arms in the air. She’s engaging to watch.

As the track finishes, Scarlet yells to the crowd, ‘It’s so lovely to see your faces….although I can’t actually see your faces.’  Well, at least she’s honest.

“Where are your clothes from?” shouts 2 excited girls at the front. “Primaaaaaaarnnni!” yells back Scarlet in her distinctive South London accent. “I love a good bargain.”

As the energy in the room turns up a notch, with more people moving from the bar to the stage; we’re told we’ll be hearing some originals from Scarlet tonight as well as some covers. As a huge MJ fan myself, I’m particularly looking forward to the Michael Jackson cover she’s promised.

Next up, ‘Crying Underwater.’ A harmonic bass guitar accompanies a sweet and seductive melody. A moderately tempo-d, provocative pop piece. Scarlet glazes around the circles of faces, as a mutual crowd of peepers, fixate right back.

Demonstrating her talented array of skilled vocal ranges and incredibly fierce voice; I’m excited to be seeing one of Britain’s hottest new up and coming, Soulful, R & B, Pop, ‘Rock Chick; stars. Because let’s face it – she has an impressive diversity of singing ability’s, sounds and styles.

As the night continues, we’re smoothly enticed towards an acoustic, slow tempo-d, jazzy alternative number. Watching Scarlet sing and perform, you can see the upmost passion that derides from every fibre in her, as her body boldly moves with every strong note and high key.

“She is really good!” shouts the guy in-front of me across to his mate. They both nod in agreement and begin ‘shoulder dancing’ as if to seal their shared approval.

“I am sweating!” bellows Scarlet. Yep – The Amersham Arms is a hot box tonight. And Scarlet certainly knows how to spice things up.

It’s Michael Jackson acoustic time as Scarlet and her band notch it down a gear. There goes that soulful voice again; at times mirroring a touch of Winehouse meets Duffy. You feel as though if you’re not careful, you’ll get lost in it.

Getting the audience to join in, shouting those 3 special letters, ‘PYT’ – there’s lots of still heads, swaying bodies around me as Scarlet clicks and swivels on stage. Stripped back and uncomplicated; for a moment, I feel like I’m in an MTV Unplugged music video.

“Whoop ha ha,” joyously sings Scarlett, as she sexily points at the crowd, naughtily shrugs her shoulders and motions, ‘come here’ with her finger to a smiley, floppy haired lad in the crowd.

Is Scarlet now slut dropping! Yes, yes she is. Well, only twice anyway.

“Everybody fucking clap!” The crowd obeys as clapping slowly builds up across the room, like a hand smacking Mexican Wave; as the equally talented Guitarist thrashes down chords and the drummer rains down beats like a percussion master.

I start to think how so many band members don’t get the recognition they deserve these days and almost as if Scarlet can hear my thoughts, she then hollers out, “Matt Brooks! Not only a drummer, he’s insane too! We write together as well….And this over here, my Guitarist and also co-writer is Dominic Ireland. They’re both amazing…I wouldn’t be able to do it without these guys.”

As Scarlet’s set draws to a close, she’s warmed up the place nicely for the arrival of Bombay Bicycle Club in whom she is support act for tonight. Leaving us on a high with ‘Cruel Love,’ Scarlet and co lead us down a pop rocky road with strong guitar chords against a deep, sexual and alluring beat. This is a powerful ballad which is beautifully demanding and soulfully captivating. I definitely feel Scarlet has saved the best till last.

“Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter – I’m @ScarletBaxter! You’ve been fucking amazing. Thank you and goodnight!”

Cheers Scarlet. You’re not too shabby (‘n’ chic), yourself.
