Shayne Ward Closer Album Review

Closer is released: 12th April 2015

His debut album released in April 06 went Platinum, and hit number 1 in both Ireland and the UK! 9 years on, 3 albums out, 2 reality TV and a West End show later, he’s back with his 4th album, Closer.

Closer features a real mix of music genre from R&B/soul to Blues, and even Dance! It’s very easy listening and tells stories of love and loss. Mix this with the beautiful voice of Shayne Ward, his impressive range, and sweet lyrics; this album is sure to make you SWOON.

Here’s our thoughts at MarkMeets on each track!!

Moving Target

The first song, Moving Target, begins with a beautiful piano riff. The song is about previous loves not working out, so building a wall to avoid Cupid’s arrow. It has a very catchy chorus. Guaranteed to get you moving along.

My Heart Would Take you Back

My Heart Would Take You Back kicks off with some trumpets to set a real Blues/Motown tone. The song is for all those people who knows this person is not right for you, and despite all your friends trying to tell you that, you can’t help but love them. Your head says one thing, but your heart says another. Shayne’s voice has a very Franki Valli-esque quality to it, which is particularly prominent in this song.

I Never said

A soft ballad about appreciating what you have before you lose it. Looking back and regretting not showing how you feel.

The Way you Were

Begins with a peaceful piano riff that really builds to an uplifting Dance chorus! It’s about change and wishing things could go back to the way they were.

Too Much to Lose

Now we slow things right back down with Too Much to Lose. This song is about falling hard for someone, that you’re then so scared to lose what you have. These words are what every person want to hear. And there’s that impressive falsetto again!

Crying, Lying eyes

This is song sets a chill out tone opening with an acoustic guitar. The bass and drums kick in, the song builds, then in comes the brass section with an awesome sax solo. A nice motown feel. The song is about becoming strong enough to walk away from someone who’s not treating you right.

I’m So Proud of You

This is a very sweet song about wanting everyone to know how you feel about someone. Having so much appreciation for someone, that you just want to shout it from the rooftops! I’m So Proud of You is a theme song for the “Honeymoon Period” of every relationship. Very cute.

Make it Simple

A sad story, with a beautiful message. For all those who have ever lost a loved one. In the end, all these material things are worthless. Love is free, but has more worth in the end than anything else. When you lose someone, life moves on, but you’ll always have the memories. Appreciate every moment.

Fake

About those people who appear to have it all. The car, the Gucci bag, Prada sunglasses… but take all this away, and what do you have left? It’s all disposable happiness. A catchy song!

I Let You Get Away

The mood slows back down with I Let You Get Away. I can see this performance in my head now… A grand piano, blue lighting, a bit of mist, and a simple spot on Shayne with a microphone. It’s all the song needs. It’s about regretting what you’ve said in a fight, and falling asleep without setting it right. An apology. Begging your love to come back and give you a second chance. If Shayne sung this to me, I’d come running back!

Rendez – Vous, The Place I Love

This tune picks up the pace again! It’s got a 60’s “Blame it on the Boogie” feel to it. Getting through the stress of your every day obligations to live for the nights where you can kick back and enjoy! Let’s get the party started!

About You Now

Some things in life are uncertain, but how strongly you feel for someone, is unquestionable. This song is about being able to admit you were wrong, and asking for another chance to show how you feel. About You Now has beautiful vocals. It’s a very powerful song that shows off Shayne’s impressive vocal range.

If You Were Here Tonight

The mood of this song reminded me of the most famous scene from Strictly Ballroom. Dancing in front of the Coca Cola sign to Time After Time. It’s a lovely melodic song.

No Promises

This song has to be my favourite on the album. I love the tone, and has very sweet lyrics about not being able to leave someone’s side <3

My Heart Will Take You Back (Remix)

Let’s finish this off with a pumping happy hardcore version of one of the best songs on the album, My Heart Would Take You Back! See you on the dancefloor!
