Leonardo DiCaprio to star as Italian Sherlock Holmes story

Leonardo DiCaprio has signed on to star in a new mafia origin movie, titled The Black Hand.

The 42-year old Oscar winner will also produce the crime thriller, which is based on Stephan Talty’s forthcoming book. Inspired by true events in the early 1900s.

The story centres on Joe Petrosino, a New York cop known as the Italian Sherlock Holmes, who took down a brutal gang of kidnappers and murderers known as The Black Hand. The ruthless group ultimately morphed into the mafia.

Paramount Pictures bosses, who purchased the rights to the book, will release the film adaptation.

Leo signed a three-year deal last March with the studio to partner with his company Appian Way Productions for upcoming projects.

DiCaprio will very soon be seen in another page-to-screen adaptation, The Devil in the White City, which reunites him with frequent collaborator Martin Scorsese.
