Little Mix have defended the body-baring costumes for their new Get Weird tour.
Four piece ‘Black Magic’ singers kicked off the U.K. leg of their tour in Cardiff, Wales on Sunday (13Mar16) and a number of reports focused on their choice of stage attire, which included Beyonce style red leotards and black crop tops with over-sized underpants.
Now some members of Little Mix have defended their stage looks, insisting they’re not too sexual or inappropriate for their fan base.
Jade Thirlwall also highlights the double standard between men and women flashing skin onstage.
“We love our leotards,” she tells Britain’s The Sun newspaper. “One, they are comfy to dance in. Two, we are sweating our t*ts off so it is a lot cooler wearing a leotard, and three, if a bloke gets his top off on stage, everyone praises him and shouts, ‘Yay, they’ve got their top off’. Then as soon as we come on and we’re in our leotards, all of a sudden there’s an issue with getting your thighs out.
“It is liberating. We wear what we want to wear and we are still true to ourselves… I don’t think it is overly sexual. If you wear a bikini on the beach, why can’t you wear a leotard on stage?”
Her bandmate Leigh-Anne Pinnock echoed her comments in an interview with Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper, insisting they would refuse to wear a costume if was too revealing.
“If we weren’t comfortable we just wouldn’t wear it,” she adds. “It’s not about being overly sexy, but it’s showing off your assets that you want to show off and if you feel confident, then boom.”
Perrie Edwards wants women to support each other more rather than criticise each other for revealing their bodies. “We need to encourage each other and if you don’t want to have your body out then you don’t have to… I never used to want to get my figure out, but now I’m like, ‘Yes, here it is'”, she explains.
The Get Weird tour ends in the U.K. on 23 April (16) before moving onto Australia, Asia and mainland Europe.
