The Revenant movie is the 2nd movie Leonardo DiCaprio & Tom Hardy have done (after Inception.) But will it be as good? Here are my thoughts.

Based in part on Michael Punke’s book. The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge. It’s 1820, a hunting party are hunting for pelts in the unsettled wilderness of Louisiana purchase. Read The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge movie review below.

Their captain is Andrew Henry (Domhnall Gleeson.) As they are resting, the native Arikana Indians attack them, cripple their party & force the hunters into a retreat while grabbing what they can into their boat, escaping down the river.

They know they’re still being pursued so Hugh Glass (Leo DiCaprio) suggests they offload nearby & let the boat go on to distract the Sar Ah hunting party who are pursuing them.

The captain agrees but not John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy.) Who thinks it’s the wrong move as is apparant by his insults toward Glass & his son Hawk (Forrest Goodluck.) But once they stop bickering & start moving. Glass gets separated & is mauled by a bear. Despite killing it, he is near enough dead he can’t speak, his body looks like it’s been tortured by Victor Zsasz & his leg is broken.

After tending to him, Fitzgerald tries to convince Henry that killing him is the best option, Henry tries but can’t, he then offers payment to whoever stays to keep Glass safe. Hawk & Bridger (Will Poulter) volunteer but Fitzgerald points out that all 3 will likely be killed.

So the captain ups the reward which causes Fitzgerald to volunteer. Once the main pack is gone, Fitzgerald tries to smoother Glass but Hawk catches him & Fitzgerald kills him. When Bridger comes back, Fitzgerald makes up a story that the Arikara are approaching & they need to go. So Fitzgerald buries Glass (quite poorly) & they depart. But Glass isn’t dead 😉

Pros, Leo DiCaprio is memorable & enthralling. To say he didn’t speak for half of the movie his body actions do the talking which engross you into his suffering. Tom Hardy is your classic selfish villian who puts his survival before everyone else, yes the famous Tom Hardy stare is there & yes he is the guy you’ll be wanting Leo to kill.

I love the long camera shots & at multiple angles & heights as well as setting the dull feel of it. The music by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Alva Noto & Bryce Dessner is completely suited to the harsh wilderness & the struggles endured by all. The flashbacks are not understandable at first but you realise why when Glass is in trouble.

The state Leo is in reminds me of In the heart of the sea, so very similar in that regard. It replicates the olden days of surviving on what you can, animals & river water. Big shout out to the effects guys for doing a brilliant job, its very convincing & realistic. It’s literally survival 1800s style. I do like it.

Cons, it’s really barbaric & shocking, there’s alot of stuff that people will turn away from ie when Animal insides are cut out, you show a 15 year old this, he/she or they would be horrified & die of shock. It’s too long, it drains you when you watch it, it shouldve been an 18. We don’t really get a detailed description of all the journeys & as for based on a book, i can’t comment so I don’t know if it’s true to it or not It’s a complete classic.

I’ll finish the review with 4 words. DiCaprio is Oscar bound.
