What are the UK’s favourite Christmas films of all time?

Imagine it, you’ve eaten a full Christmas dinner (including the pudding) and now it’s time to retire to the sofa to watch a film to keep you entertained during your food coma, but what do you watch?

In order to find out what the nations favourite Christmas film is…Take a look at the results below!

UK’s favourite Christmas films of all time

A Muppets Christmas Carol (1992) – 102 votes
The Muppets take on the Charles Dickens classic stars Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge in a role he really sinks his teeth into. This is arguably the most faithful of all the film adaptations, with acting so good, you forget you are watching a bunch of puppets.

A Christmas Carol (2009) – 108 votes
Narrowly edging out it’s Muppet counterpart is the motion picture version of the tale. The motion picture is a technique director Robert Zemeckis favoured when filming another popular Christmas film, The Polar Express. This time however Jim Carrey is playing Scrooge, and about half a dozen other characters… Like he does.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) – 112 votes
By 1993, that same old Christmas routine had eventually worn off and some new life was needed.
Enter Tim Burton and his creation of The Nightmare Before Christmas. This alternative Christmas musical film proved animation was not just for kids; a wonderfully crafted, gruesome and highly amusing film that really captures the imagination.

Die Hard (1988) – 126 votes
Bruce Willis’ character John McClane needs no introduction. Die Hard takes place on Christmas Eve as a German terrorist organization led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) and his cronies take control of a skyscraper building, who McClanes wife happens to be there. The family values that the film holds are what really give it the Christmas warmth, I guess the action is pretty cool too.

Miracle on 34th Street (1993) – 112 votes
Was anyone else on this planet born to play Father Christmas like Richard Attenborough? Easy answer… No. His charm on camera made him the benchmark for all Santa’s…except Bad Santa! The courtroom scene at the end is one of the most memorable scenes in film history. A real feel good family film this one. Whatever happened to the young girl???

Elf (2003) – 150 votes
Always in a supporting role. Elf, believe it or not, really made Will Ferrell a Hollywood leading man, bumbling around New York in a giant Elf costume. Like Miracle on 34th of Street the film goes beyond the comedy to ask us to embrace the full wonder of the festive season, delivering constant belly laughs.

The Snowman (1982) – 161 votes
The Snowman really is a British institution, and for over 30 years, families all over the nation have spent 26 minutes of their day watching this same story, never getting bored… and how could you? This wordless epic was clearly crafted with a whole lotta love by Raymond Briggs, which transcends through our television screen and makes us feel all warm and gooey inside.

Love Actually (2003) – 166 votes
Yes!! Apparently, Love Actually is the third best Christmas film of all time! Love Actually is actually the penultimate collaboration between director Richard Curtis and Hugh Grant. Was this the key to the death of the British rom- com? Love Actually follows multiple intertwined stories, with one emotion, connecting us all, giving the film a massively Chrismassy feel.

It’s A Wonderful Life (1946) – 287 votes
Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey really encapsulated the everyday American man in this quintessential Christmas tear jerker. Fed up with his existence after nothing has ever gone his way, he is shown what life In Bedford Falls would be like without him by angel Clarence. If you don’t believe in Karma, this classic might just convince you otherwise.

Home Alone (1990) – 321 votes
It’s Home Alone’s 25th Birthday this year! I know, now you feel old! However, the adventures of Kevin and the Wet Bandits will remain a timeless Christmas classic. The real gem in this film is Joe Pesci, who rumour had it, forgot he was in a family film and kept swearing on set. Classic Pesci.

So, that’s it. What do you think of this top 10? Is your favourite Christmas film included? Make sure to leave us your thoughts below, we would love to know!
