Facebook Messenger hits the 1 billion monthly users mark

The growth makes it the second most-popular iOS app of all-time

Facebook have revealed that its Messenger app is now used by more than one billion people each month.

Five months ago, Facebook said it had 800 million users on the platform meaning it has added another 25 per cent in mere months. Facebook, of course, also owns WhatsApp, which announced it passed the billion user mark in February this year.

The growth makes it the second most-popular iOS app of all-time and more than 17 billion photos are sent between friends each month. The company also noted that it’s closing ground on communication-dedicated rivals (think Skype) with 10 per cent of all VoIP calls now being made through the platform.

Clearly, the recent popularity of bots is starting to hit the platform too – with 18,000 now available on Messenger.

“People use Messenger to connect with the people and businesses they care most about,” said Facebook in a blog post. “They make plans, share dreams, send payments, tell jokes, play games, let their loved ones know they’re thinking of them and much, much more.

“We’re grateful for all the people who are sending billions of messages every day and we hope to send 1 billion thank yous in the form of a new floating balloon gift that everyone can use to celebrate.

“Just send a balloon emoji to your friends to add a touch of whimsy and delight to any conversation. Thank you for using Messenger and being part of our one-billion-strong community.”
