Actors to watch in 2017

Multi award winning actress Andrea Riseborough has an extensive theatrical CV. She is most well-known for roles within films including Madonna’s directorial success, W.E as historical character, Wallis Simpson, Shadow Dancer as the lead, Birdman, (in which Andrea shared the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and which won the Oscar for Best Picture at the 87th Academy Awards), Never Let Me Go alongside Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightly, Made in Dagenham, Oblivion with Tom Cruise, and Brighton Rock with Helen Mirren and Sam Riley. Riseborough took on the role of Margaret Thatcher in the BBC’s TV film, Margaret Thatcher: The Long Walk to Finchley. For this part she was nominated for BAFTA Best Actress award. Andrea can currently be seen on Netflix starring in the second season of the Netflix thriller, Bloodline.

This Autumn Andrea will star alongside Julie Walters and Robbie Coltrane in a 4-part series on Channel 4, National Treasure. She will also act alongside Michael Sheen, Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams in Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals which is due for international release in November.  Andrea will later be seen playing the role of Romaine opposite Toby Jones in the BBC’s adaptation of Agatha Christies’s The Witness for the Prosecution, which will be a two-parter Christmas special.

 


 
Playwright and actor Arinzé Kene will be seen in the Donmar Warehouses’ production of One Night in Miami from October through to December. Playing the part of singer Sam Cooke in this fictional account of a real night in history, this four hander tells the story of the night Muhammad Ali won the world heavyweight boxing title. Arinzé stars as the lead opposite Russell Tovey in the film The Pass, due for release in December.

He also takes a role in the much anticipated film prequel to Harry Potter by J.K Rowling, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – due for release in November. Arinzé will then be seen this Autumn playing opposite an all-star young cast in E4’s new comedy drama from the makers of Misfits – Crazyhead. Kene’s theatre credits include Been So Long (Young Vic), The Spectacular (Traverse), The Lion King (Lyceum Theatre) and Daddy Cool (Cole Kitchen). Television credits include BBC’s Our Girl and E4’s Youngers.

 


 
Conor MacNeill will next be seen in NETFLIX’s debut feature film and war thriller The Siege of Jadotville opposite Jamie Dornan & Mark Strong as Corporal Frank “Radio op” Williams. Conor will be seen as a pivotal role, once again opposite Jamie Dornan, in BBC thriller The Fall – both due for release this Autumn. Conor is currently filming a new series regular in Channel 4’s brilliant comedy No Offence which is due to air early next year. A fantastic writer, Conor has written the screenplay for his first Feature film The Laughter of Our Children, which was announced winner of the 2014 Northern Ireland Screen New Talent Focus, adjudicated by Film 4 & the BFI.

The film shot early 2016 directed by BAFTA and EMMY award winning director David Blair with Conor taking the leading role of Ciaran alongside a stellar cast including Stephen Graham, Michelle Fairley and Robert Sheehan. The script for his short film The Party was selected by the Irish Film Board as part of their After ’16 scheme which was part of the centenary memorial of the 1916 Easter Rising. Conor performed to critical acclaim as Bartley McCormick opposite Daniel Radcliffe in the hugely successful West End revival of Martin McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmann directed by Michael Grandage. Reprising his role in the same production on Broadway, the show received 6 TONY Award nominations.


 
Gethin Anthony is best known for his role as Renly Baratheon in Game Of Thrones and for playing the lead, Charles Manson, in Sky Atlantic’s Aquarius which was released in the UK last month.

Gethin’s additional television credits include ITV’s hugely popular Call The Midwife, BBC’s 10 Days To War and HBO’s Into The Storm. He also starred as Maurice Travis in Antony Petrou’s feature film We Are Monster, which was nominated for The Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film at Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2014.

 


  
This year, actor Jim Sturgess will be seen playing Callum Ferguson opposite Freddie Highmore and Alfie Allen in the BBC’s Stephen Poliakoff drama miniseries Close to the Enemy. Jim is most well-known for his role as Jude in 2007 musical romance drama Across the Universe, for his portrayal of Dexter opposite Anne Hathaway in the film adaptation of the well loved book, One Day and for playing opposite Tom Hanks and Halle Berry in the cult hit Cloud Atlas.

Other notable films include 21, alongside Kevin Spacey and Kate Bosworth, Daniel Alfredson’s Kidnapping Mr. Heineken with Anthony Hopkins, crime drama Crossing Over opposite Harrison Ford and The Way Back alongside Colin Farrell. Jim won the Best Actor Award at the Fantasporto Film Festival for his role as Jamie Morgan in Heartless, directed by Philip Ridley.

 


 
RADA trained Nick Hendrix is currently filming as the new sidekick DS Jamie Winter in the internationally renowned series Midsomer Murders, which is due to air early next year.

Having recently been seen playing opposite Laura Carmichael in a crucial role in the well-reviewed ITV murder series Marcella, which will premiere globally on Netflix from 1st July and landing a part in the much anticipated Netflix produced drama The Crown, 2016 is set to be a very exciting year for Nick.

Other notable TV shows in which Nick has featured include Black Mirror, The White Queen and Call The Midwife. Film credits include Legend, alongside Tom Hardy and Suffragette with Carey Mulligan. Theatre credits include Man and Superman and The Light Princess at the National Theatre and What The Butler Saw in the West End.

 


Nikki Amuka- Bird will be seen later this year taking the lead role of Natalie in the BBC’s adaptation of Zadie Smith’s bestselling novel, NW. In September Nikki will be seen leading a cast in 8-episode series Quarry. Amuka-Bird will also be seen this Autumn alongside Rachel Weisz, Andrew Scott and Timothy Spall in film, Denial, which tells the true story of acclaimed writer and historian Deborah E. Lipstadt battling for historical truth to prove the Holocaust after David Irving, a renowned denier, sues her for libel.

Other career highlights include playing the role of DCI Erin Gray in the internationally successful Luther opposite Idris Elba, starring in sci-fi action film Jupiter Ascending alongside Mila Kunis and taking a role in the BBC’s much loved Death in Paradise. Nikki also has an impressively extensive theatrical CV, working at The Royal Court, The National Theatre, The RSC, and Bristol Old Vic to name just a few.
