Sara Cox lined-up as possible X Factor judge

Radio 1 DJ Sara Cox could well be the surprise announcement as the new X Factor 2014 judge if Mel B rejects the role.

Simon Cowell confirmed yesterday that the new X Factor panelist had finally been chosen, teasing that they were female and that an announcement would be made later this week.

“We’ve settled on someone and we’re going to make an announcement this week,” he said. “It’s going to be a girl, but I can’t say who as the contract isn’t signed yet.”

Simon explained: “It’s not just finding a name, it’s finding someone who will do the job.

“They have to be able to work with the artists and give up a lot of their time, and that’s why it’s a long decision.”

While we all expect Mel B to be revealed as the new judge, it seems there could be a Sara Cox shaped surprise in store when the announcement comes in the next few days.

“Bosses are pretty certain they will be able to officially unveil Mel B as the fourth X Factor judge next week but she hasn’t signed a deal yet,” a source said this morning.

They told The Sun: “There have been upsets in the past with the judging panel and so producers want to have other names in the frame if they are needed.

“Sara Cox is an intriguing one. She met with producers last week and talked over the role and told them she was interested.”

Whoever is announced as the new judge will join Simon, Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh on the panel with auditions beginning filming later this month.

Our editor Mark Boardman said “Mel B would be the public’s preferred judge over Sara”.
