Following the soaps can be demanding task. There are many episodes of each show each week and so there’s a lot to keep up with. Even if you manage this, there will be plenty of thing happening outside of the episodes to keep track of, whether that’s departures from the show, new cast members, upcoming storylines and more. For some of the biggest news concerning Coronation Street and Emmerdale, you’ve come to the right place.

The major news revolving around Coronation Street is the passing of Jean Alexander, best known for playing soap icon Hilda Ogden between 1964 and 1987. The character is one of the most well known from British television and easily one of the most popular. Hilda came high in such polls as fourth in the most recognisable woman in Britain in 1982 and in 2004 she was voted the greatest soap character of all time. Alexander’s portal as typical Northern housewife became a part of pop culture and has influenced prints, a New York granny chic fashion craze and Queen’s I Want to Break Free music video.

Over the years, Hilda would be included in countless storylines, usually with her husband Stan. These would mostly revolve around relatable working-class problem such as financial woes and dealing with others looking down upon her. Hilda’s tough but positive personality was beloved by the nation and Alexander’s departure in 1987 was seen by over 26 million people.

Jean Alexander would also be known for her work in Last of the Summer Wine, appearing as Auntie Wainwright in many episodes over a twenty-two year period. She had not appeared on television since 2010 and officially retired in 2012, after spending over sixty years on the screen. She passed just after her 90th birthday.

Things are looking tough for the characters of Emmerdale as a big week begins on October 17th. Many explosive scenes were filmed in August in Langcross Film Studios in Surrey rather than the usual on location set in the Yorkshire Dales. Soaps are known for being slower placed and more realistic than many other TV show but the Emmerdale team are trying something more ambitious for these episodes as it will feature many big stunts. Described as a cataclysmic event that many characters are involved in, one or more regulars could be among the casualties. The event starts with at funeral and will slowly recall the shocking story. Who goes, who stays and what explosive events will unfold could affect the show for some time to come, taking things in a darker direction.
