7 Lesser Known Harry Potter Characters That Had A Major Impact On The Story

With The Harry Potter franchise having a lot to celebrate in 2022 (with the books quickly approaching their 25th anniversary while the movies celebrate their 20th), many fans have decided to mark the occasion by either re-reading the stories again or binge-watching the films.

While the series has introduced brilliant characters that are etched as some of the best fictitious characters, at times, the minor characters are also seen to dominate the screen presence. Sadly, minor characters often aren’t credited for what they deserve due to a lack of presence, which is a shame considering there have been many instances in Harry Potter books and movies where they all have helped ‘The Chosen One,’ unknowingly or knowingly.

Moaning Myrtle

Although Myrtle was considered to be an annoying ghost who just wandered the halls of Hogwarts, some fans have begun to realize that she deserved a lot more credit for her helpful actions.

For instance, Myrtle provides Harry with information about the Chamber of Secrets when they come looking for help. She was also seen to help Harry in Goblet of Fire when it came to the clues in the Triwizard Tournament, providing him with hints on how to succeed and prepare on the next event. She may have been irritating to the students but she was always on hand to offer her any help if they needed it.

Aberforth Dumbledore

The younger brother of Albus Dumbledore is known for his temper and bluntness. The tension between the brothers is visibly draft, and the trio experiences sheer awkwardness during their meeting.

Despite their differences, Aberforth cares for the kids. He provides the way into Hogwarts and even fights with the rest in the Battle of Hogwarts. He also sends in-house elf Dobby to rescue the trio from Malfoy Manor. Aberforth’s strong demeanor is often misunderstood, while his true intention is to guide and help Harry and the rest. He watched out for Harry the same way that Albus did.

The Weasley Twins

The Weasleys are known for their kindness, warmth, and how much they help and care about Harry. It is pretty evident that without the Weasleys, Harry would be lost, specifically during his first year at Hogwarts.

Harry’s relationship is undeniable with Ron and later Ginny, yet many don’t realize the importance and the friendship the twins had with Harry. They were the ones to hand over the Marauders’ Map; they even willingly helped Harry in the Battle of the Seven Potters. Unfortunately, it was shocking to see Fred die during the Second Wizarding War, yet their presence seems way too big for the credits they get.

Dobby

Dobby is an adored character despite having limited screen time and his relationship with the trio is well received and warm. His selflessness and caring nature towards others has received a great deal of appreciation from the audience.

Not only has he helped Harry and the gang countless times, but his biggest savior moment was when he saved the group from the Malfoy Manor. As a house elf, it is not expected for the character to be listed in the main cast, yet Dobby’s pleasing screen presence gives the audience their beloved character quality depth.

Xenophilius Lovegood

Harry’s first encounter with Xenophilius was during Bill and Fleur’s wedding, where fans could see that Mr. Lovegood always supported Harry, expressing this vocally in The Quibbler.

Despite getting into trouble with the Death Eaters and eventually leading Harry and his friends to the Death Eaters in exchange for Luna, Xenophilius was still a good man and believed in Harry throughout. His works are introduced briefly, but his guidance and knowledge about the Deathly Hallows help the trio understand what they were up against and what they were indeed looking for.

Narcissa Malfoy

Draco’s mother is a supportive and caring wife and mother, who would go to great lengths to protect her family. Her relationship with Harry might be insignificant, yet her betrayal of Voldemort was unintentionally helpful for Harry.

Not knowing if Draco was alive or not, on Harry reveals that Draco was alive, Narcissa seized the opportunity to betray Lord Voldemort and lie to him about Harry’s death while he was very much breathing. Narcissa’s move might have put her in danger, but it inadvertently helped Harry to his victory. This act deserves credit for eventually paving the way for Harry’s victory.

Neville Longbottom

The obvious lead would be the “round-faced Gryffindor.” Neville’s first introduction was as a disorganized, mediocre student who was purely gifted in Herbology. Over the series, he gains confidence in his magical abilities making him a competent wizard. Neville showed bravery and courage early on in ‘The Philosopher’s Stone.’

He plays a significant role in destroying the Horcrux and aids Harry in eventually killing Voldemort. He may be the most developed side character, and his impact on the storyline fits perfectly. Neville’s presence in the story contributes to the final Wizarding War despite not a lot of credits going for being the right hand needed for Harry to kill Voldemort.
