Tom Hardy is confirmed to play Eddie Brock in Marvel’s Spider-Man spin-off movie Venom but what do we know?
Just when you thought London born Tom Hardy couldn’t get any more awesome, the star has been confirmed as playing Eddie Brock in Marvel’s Venom movie.
Fresh from swoon-worthy appearances on Cbeebies and chasing down actual criminals in the street, the ‘Black Hawk Down’ Hardy will be taking on his second superhero villain role after previously playing Bane in DC’s The Dark Knight Rises.
It’s surprising to see Hardy agreeing to another superhero-based role after Bane, but he’s a fan of the character and clearly he thinks there’s something to work with in the alien symbiote that requires a human host to live and bestows great powers with little responsibility. In Venom’s case, that host is journalist Eddie Brock, the role Hardy is taking on. Relegated to a side threat in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, the creature was supposed to come back after Sony decided to spin-off an entire Spider-cinematic universe. Alex Kurtzman was aboard to write and direct a new movie, but all of that was mothballed when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to generate much interest (and suffered low box office returns).
This is a big step in putting things back on track, though of course there’s the matter of Homecoming performing at the box office.
In the Marvel Comics universe, Venom has appeared alongside Spider-Man, Iron Man, Deadpool, Hulk, and many other Marvel Comics characters.
The much anticipated film will be directed by Zombieland and Santa Clarita Diet’s Ruben Fleischer and the script will be written by Scott Rosenberg (Con Air, Kangaroo Jack) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2).
Although we have over a year to wait for Venom, this summer will see Tom Holland make his debut as Spier-Man in new movie Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The movie is released October 5th 2018.
