Viggo: talks about budget movie ‘Jauja’

Viggo Mortensen thinks family relationships make movies interesting.

Viggo Mortensen’s new film ‘Jauja’  is just as interesting as Interstellar at “a fraction of the cost”.

The actor is best known for portraying Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings franchise and also appeared alongside Oscar Isaac and Kirsten Dunst in The Two Faces of January.

Next up is drama Jauja, which focuses on his home country of Denmark and tells the story of a father and his daughter and their important journey. It hit a nerve with Viggo, who only selects roles in films he would go and watch himself.

“Which I know is subjective, but I like all kinds of movies,” he reasoned to British newspaper Metro. “They can be big or small-budget movies.

“Jauja is an interesting case in how you can do so much with so little money. If you take a movie like Interstellar, which was a very interesting film, most of the important topics in it are the same – family relationships, linear time, who we are and what we are doing, where we are going, survival – and they are dealt with for a fraction of the cost in Jauja.”

Viggo, 56, was partly drawn to his latest film because it’s set in Denmark but ultimately it was the story that won him over.

Up next he’ll appear in French film Far From Men and American indie Captain Fantastic. He also has other ventures, including a publishing company.

With such a busy life, Viggo makes the most out of any time off.

“A few weeks ago I had a week and a half off,” he smiled.

“I really enjoyed doing nothing on the first day and then I eventually started doing things I hadn’t done in a while: writing letters, finishing reading two different books, going to a cinema, watching some TV series, which I don’t usually have time to do.”
