How the Royal Family Marked Queen Elizabeth’s Accession Day

Queen Elizabeth II‘s accession day felt different this year. 6th February, marked the 70th anniversary of Accession in 1952

Since 1952, Feb. 6 has been the day royal watchers mark the anniversary of the Queen taking the throne and starting her historic reign following the death of her father, King George VI.

But this week, the Queen’s familyall respected and marked the first anniversary of her accession since her death in September.

King Charles IIIQueen Consort Camilla and the rest of the royal family spent the day privately, as there are were scheduled engagements, a royal press spokesperson confirmed to MarkMeets.com.

Just one year ago, the Queen marked the 70th anniversary of her accession in 1952 with a message to the people that expressed her determination to live a life devoted to service and her gratitude to family.

“I am fortunate to have had the steadfast and loving support of my family,” she said. “I was blessed that in Prince Philip, I had a partner willing to carry out the role of consort and unselfishly make the sacrifices that go with it. It is a role I saw my own mother perform during my father’s reign.”

During her life, Queen Elizabeth traditionally spent her accession day privately at Sandringham, where King George died and where the royal family gathers every Christmas. It was not only the anniversary of her beloved father’s death, but also the day her life changed forever. But there were also celebratory elements to the anniversary. The bells would ring at Westminster Abbey, where her coronation took place in 1953, and a 21-gun salute would be given to mark the occasion.

The day after Queen Elizabeth’s death on September 8 at the age of 96, King Charles officially named Camilla Queen Consort in his first speech as monarch.
