The star recently said that it’s vocally and lyrically more mature: “I think people will be surprised by how edgy we get with the lyrics and the concepts. Vocally, this album demolishes ‘Handwritten’, so people are not going to be ready for some of the songs in that sense.”

The 17 year-old star also revealed a desire to write songs for other artists, adding: “Absolutely. I wrote a few tracks I just haven’t pitched to anyone yet. My album was obviously the first thing that we needed to get done, but there are a lot of tracks that I know aren’t for me but would suit other people really well.”

“I’d love to work with Bruno Mars and Ryan Tedder. And obviously Ed Sheeran. I think they’re all phenomenal songwriters, so as soon as I get a chance, that’d be awesome.”

On Sept. 10, Mendes will headline New York City’s Madison Square Garden to deliver a first-time preview of the album, where fans will be treated to what’s being teased as an immersive, one-time-only Illuminate “experience.” Tickets to the Madison Square Garden show will go on sale on July 16 with pre-sales beforehand.

Meanwhile, Mendes will kick off the 26-date North American leg of his world tour on July 15 in Florida, wrapping up Aug. 21 for a homecoming show at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada.

Shawn Mendes told MarkMeets he will release his sophomore album Illuminate on September 23rd.
