Fame has always been a fickle mistress, having been a complicated pursuit for, at the minimum, hundreds of years. With the rise of the digital age, the entire concept of fame and the potential avenues for finding and maintaining it, have seen immense shifts in possibilities and scope. Socialites like the Kardashians infect screens the world over, and no small part of this is accomplished through technological savvy.
So which are the avenues that celebrities have taken to keep their image in the mainstream?
Social Media
Undoubtedly the most important component of achieving and maintaining modern fame comes from the use of social media. Facebook alone has around 2.4 billion users, with the likes of Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube also generating significant numbers and attention.
At this point, most social media integration has evolved to the point where it is a near-necessary component for fame, not only for socialites, actors, and musicians, but also for politicians and public figures of all kinds.
From daily updates to disastrously ignorant and disconnected advertisements, social media is where modern celebrities will make or break themselves.
Tech Sponsorship
Perhaps the second-most important component of maintaining modern celebrity comes from the world of technologically focussed sponsorship. As the majority of celebrity culture is focussed on the young, it makes sense that this would be a popular avenue from which attention can be gained. While many products and services lean into this form of support, it is perhaps gaming that has seen the most success.
One of the most successful integrations here has been born from mobile gaming, such as with the Kim Kardashian: Hollywood game. With well over a million downloads at common stores like Apple have often proven a worthwhile investment.
Similar success has been seen through adaption into the world of online casino gaming. Websites often act in conjunction with both celebrities and their latest projects, with slots based on the likes of The Hangover and Star Trek helping to generate buzz. Britney Spears and Paris Hilton have even had their own dedicated slot machines, at times when they were more relevant.
Streaming Opportunities
The final aspect of modern celebrity we want to look at is that of streaming opportunities. Often seen as an arm of social media, this form of access is a little different in that it primarily deals with a new online-only live form of engagement.
By playing games with other popular people or groups, or even simply asking questions, streaming allows celebrities to directly interface with their fans on a very visible level. While these experiences are often highly practised, they still help to give the impression that a celebrity is ‘down-to-earth’, as the common expression goes.
It’s a Job
Achieving celebrity can be easy. Maintaining celebrity, however, is nothing short of a full-time career. In the age of instant gratification, where one stupid move can mean the difference between success and failure, we have to give credit to those who play the game well. Regardless of what we think of the personalities themselves, they work hard, and in itself, this is worthy of some level of respect.
