Mark Wahlberg plans to expand Mile 22 film into a trilogy

Hollywood actor Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg are currently working with STX Entertainment on a brand new action franchise.

Discussions of Mile 22 first took place in 2015, when Wahlberg was working on the project with his director Peter Berg, with the ‘Deepwater Horizon’ actor now slated to co-star alongside MMA fighter Ronda Rousey and Iko Uwais.

The director who has worked with Wahlberg on several films said: “Mark and I have made three films now that are pretty heavy, to put it mildly,” said Berg, according to Slash Film. “For us, to do Mile 22 and something that’s fictional, and what we hope to be an intelligent, adult action film that’s got a lot of muscle and intensity… It’s a piece of fiction we’re very excited about it.”

Mile 22 has backing from STX Entertainment, with STX chairman Adam Fogelson adding during the talk that the company was “planning for it to be a trilogy”.

While STX is yet to release any details about when the project may go into production, executives have released a synopsis for the film, and shared that it will follow a CIA agent stationed in Indonesia who has to transport an informant from a city to a getaway plane at an airport 22 miles away.

45 year-old Wahlberg also shared his enthusiasm for the project at the industry event saying: “I’ve been able to make a lot of different movies in a lot of different genres, and I still don’t feel like I have the movie role that really kind of defines ‘me’. When I say me and my body of work, I’m really hoping this is the thing. I’m hoping the first thing you think of when you think Mark Wahlberg is Mile 22,” he explained.

Wahlberg will next star Paramount’s Transformers: The Last Knight and the upcoming sequel to 2015’s Daddy’s Home.
