It’s been three years since Cheryl last appeared on the show after falling out with Simon following her axe from The X Factor USA in 2011.

According to Reveal magazine, Cheryl’s ‘nice’ attitude is grating on the X Factor chief who is clearly after controversy and rows.

A supposed show source said: “Cheryl is setting herself up as the kind of judge who never has a bad word to say bout anybody, and Simon is frustrated because she’s not showing the same edge she did in the old days.”

Cheryl and Simon previously clashed on the show this year over the younger acts, with this year’s age limit down to 14 for the first time in 2008.

“She sees it as her role to help the young kids who come on the show. She wants to encourage them, not shatter their dreams,” the source added.

However, Simon’s confident he can get Cheryl to become outspoken again.

The insider explained: “Simon is trying everything in his power to provoke her into doing something rash, but so far it’s not working.

“Having said that, he’s an absolute genius at manipulating people, so this war is only just beginning.”

While Cheryl may not be trying to become the new female Simon on the panel, she’s still found herself on the wrong side of the X Factor audience.

The Call My Name hitmaker was booed and jeered at bootcamp over some of her controversial choices of acts for her final six.

The X Factor will start on ITV at the end of the month.
