Introducing Dipo – Exclusive Interview from the ‘Ain’t No Love’ Vocalist

Meet DIPO an incredible vocalist who is hot on the radar of music fans, tastemakers and producers worldwide. Inspired by soul legends Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Teddy Pendagras and Afro-beat legend Fela Kuti The Nigerian born, Canadian based artist oozes with the heart of soul and rhythm and blues.

Beginning his musical journey back in 2009 the vocal powerhouse made a name for himself with his breakout single “Be Your Man” produced by Nigerian producer “Spax”, which remains a classic till this day. With a string of projects under his belt including ‘Lagos to Toronto’ and his “New Vintage” EP, he has also shared the stage alongside Nigeria’s finest like 2face Idibia, D’banj, Wande Coal and also opened for Nigeria’s biggest alternative singer “Asa” at her “Asa on the green” concert.

His latest release comes in the form of his mesmerising single ‘Ain’t No Love’, which delves into a turbulent relationship fuelled by passion and loss. Watch the official music video further below.

You’ve recently released your single ‘Ain’t No Love’, what’s the concept behind the track?

The song is about hanging on to your “honey” (love) in the pursuit of success/money. It also states the fact that love/relationships can be stressful when there are financial strains.

From the moment you press play your music radiates with the heart and soul of RnB, how would you describe your sound?

I would say the base of my sound is soul music; but I have a rather wide scope; a little bit of RnB, Jazz, Afro, Pop, but the base is soul.

How did the track come about, what was the creative process like when you’re making the single?

I started writing the song on my apartment balcony in early 2015, I wrote half the chorus and left it. When I got in the studio with my producer (Andrew Dawson), I sold him the idea, he bought it, and we wrote the rest of the song together.

You’re originally from Nigeria and currently residing in Canada, does the music scene in both countries influence your music?

Of course, I live in Toronto, which is a multi-cultural city, which is very close to Lagos city where I lived in Nigeria. The sceneries, the people, the music, culture are all of great influence to me.

Who are your musical influences?

I love listening to the old guys, people like Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Fela Kuti.

During your career you’ve shared the stage with the likes of 2face Idibia, D’banj, Wande Coal and also opened for Nigeria’s biggest alternative singer “Asa” at her “Asa on the green” concert. What was that experience like?

The experience was awesome, it gave me an opportunity to test myself in front of a large audience, so I can grow, and I am glad I got to share my music with a lot more people.

If you had to the opportunity to work with an artist, who would be your dream collaboration?

I would love to collaborate with Alicia Keys, H.E.R, Lianne La Havas.

Do you have any live gigs lined up?

I am working on taking my forthcoming EP on the road after its release in April.

What are your goals for the rest of 2019 and what can fans expect?

I already started working on my debut full length album, I am hoping it would be ready by the end of the year.
