Keanu Reeves and director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, 2012) are teaming up to executive produce a new sci-fi series called New Angeles that Slingshot Global Media will produce and distribute.
There’s no word yet on whether Reeves will be acting in the series, but Emmerich will direct the pilot himself so we can expect it to look and feel pretty big. Gregg Hurwitz, who worked on the V television series, will write the pilot and executive produce as well.
There’s no word on when New Angeles will be hitting screens or if there’s a full series order waiting after the pilot is shot, but the idea sounds sort intriguing in the sense that it more directly echoes The Matrix than you might expect. Hit the jump for more on New Angeles.
Here’s the official synopsis for New Angeles:
The show will be set in the future, based around a young man who escapes the mundane reality of his life by entering an exciting virtual reality world called New Angeles. Once down the rabbit hole, he adopts a new identity, becoming the man he was always destined to be, and in the process, unlocking the keys to a mystery that has real world consequences for him and his family.
Definitely has a bit of Neo’s journey in there, doesn’t it? We’ll see how this shakes out. It could be cool, though I doubt Reeves will be playing the lead role. Even though he looks younger than most people 15 years his junior, he doesn’t qualify as a “young man” in Hollywood terms.
