Fashion’s biggest night is scheduled to take place at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, May 1, 2023. Avid viewers, of course, are dying to know how they can either watch the star-studded Met Gala red carpet on cable TV or where they can stream the live show.
This May the best-dressed stars gather to celebrate the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute on the most high-octane red carpet of the year. And even if you didn’t land an invite, you can still tune in on MarkMeets.com website and social platforms (YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter) to catch all the action on the Met steps.
Starting at 6:30 p.m. EST on Monday, May 1, the official 2023 Met Gala livestream will be hosted by television personality La La Anthony, man-about-town Derek Blasberg, and Saturday Night Live cast member Chloe Fineman, while internet multi-hyphenate Emma Chamberlain will return as Vogue’s red carpet correspondent. (Will Emma have another viral red-carpet run-in with Hollywood’s Class Flirt, Jack Harlow? Only time will tell.)
Meanwhile, Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Vogue editor Anna Wintour will serve as the event’s official co-chairs.
This year’s Met Gala exhibition is dedicated to the work of the late German designer Karl Lagerfeld, whose 36-year tenure as Chanel creative director turned him into a singular pop-cultural fashion figurehead. In turn, the dress code theme for this year’s Met Gala will be “in honor of Karl,” thus opening the floor for the night’s celeb attendees to reference the many eras of Lagerfeld’s seven-decade-long career, which also included tenures at Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, and his namesake Karl Lagerfeld brand.
“Karl never tired of telling me that fashion did not belong in a museum,” the Costume Institute’s lead curator Andrew Bolton told Vogue last fall. “When we worked on the Chanel show together [in 2005], he was incredibly generous in what he lent, but he was completely disinterested in the exhibition itself! He would say, ‘Fashion is not art—fashion belongs on the street, on women’s bodies, on men’s bodies.’”
The upcoming show, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, marks only the third time the Costume Institute has dedicated an exhibition to a single designer. (Previously, the museum mounted blockbuster shows for Alexander McQueen and Comme Des Garçons founder Rei Kawakubo.) It will be on view to the public from May 5 to July 16 at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.
