‘The Personal History Of David Copperfield’ to open BFI London Film Festival

The European premiere of UK filmmaker Armando Iannucci’s retelling of The Personal History Of David Copperfield will open the 63rd BFI London Film Festival (LFF) on October 2, 2019, as the first image of Dev Patel in the film is revealed.

Adapted by Iannucci and Simon Blackwell from Dickens’ 1850 novel, the film stars Patel as the eponymous Copperfield, a young man in Victorian England making the journey from youth to maturity.

The cast also includes Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw, Gwendoline Christie, Hugh Laurie, Benedict Wong and Iannucci’s The Thick Of It star Peter Capaldi.

The Personal History Of David Copperfield is produced by Iannucci with regular collaborator Kevin Loader. It was developed with FilmNation Entertainment and Film4. FilmNation is handling international sales and Lionsgate has UK rights.

Patel is one of several former Screen Stars of Tomorrow to appear, alongside Morfydd Clark as Copperfield’s love interest Dora Spenlow and Aneurin Barnard as his childhood friend James Steerforth.

LFF 2019 will run from October 2 – 13, with the full programme announced on August 29.
