Meanwhile Kate Winslet, 47, looked effortlessly chic in a crisp white open collar silk shirt which she added a loose black tie too. The Titanic star stunned in a stylish black blazer over the top and rocked a pair of black leather skinny trousers showcasing her incredible figure.

The beauty elevated her frame in a pair of leather boots and accessorised with an eye catching long gold necklace and drop earrings.

Sigourney Weaver cut a smart figure in a black blazer over a white shirt and trousers as she beamed for photos with her hands in her pockets.

She told MarkMeets.com on the red carpet: “I usually wore black turtlenecks and an olive-green suede jumper/tunic thing. It was kind of like a beatnik outfit, I guess.

“I think it’s a great age, you know? Kids are so imaginative at that age – they’re so sensitive, easily hurt, easily thrilled and they see things so clearly. I tried to allow that self-conscious, awkward energy [I had] to flow into the character.”

Sigourney starred in the original ‘Avatar’ film but her character Grace, a scientist, was killed off towards the end and she had every confidence in director James Cameron when he pitched an idea for her to return to the franchise in a different way.

“I thought, ‘Well, Jim is smart. If he thinks I can do this, let’s give it a whirl!’

“I don’t think John Wayne was asked to play a 14 year old when he was in his 70s. It’s something new.”

A lot of the film is set underwater so the cast underwent a year of free-diving training with US Navy Seals and Sigourney can now hold her breath for six and a half minutes while submerged.

She laughed: “It does remind you a little bit of those great British adventurers like Captain Cook, who went on these amazing sailing ships to the other side of the world.”

The ‘Aliens’ actress is very proud of her work, admitting she has had “exactly the career [she] wanted”, although she insisted that doesn’t mean she has “all the answers”.

She said: “I think that it’s OK to not have all the answers, you know? People look at me like I have answers to things. I don’t. I’m just in the pond along with everybody else.”

The 73-year-old was all smiles as she accessorised with a chunky pair of silver hoop earrings and pointed toe heels. The Oscar-winning actress plays Ronal – one of the underwater beings closely related to the Na’vi in the latest film. She has achieved a feat most actresses in age-obsessed Hollywood could only dream about playing a 14-year-old amphibious alien in the latest Avatar movie.

Sigourney landed the role 59 years younger than she is after playing scientist Dr Grace Augustine in the original but was killed off. Director James Cameron was so desperate to have her in the new film that he created the teenage avatar part of Kiri for her.  James, 68, rocked a black jumper and grey trousers on the blue carpet as he joined the stars posing for photos.

Sam Worthington kept casual in a black bomber jacket and trousers as he joined the rest of the cast. The 46-year-old Australian actor returns in the sequel as Jake Sully, who has a new family of his own on Pandora.

The second Avatar film brings back much of the original cast including Sam Worthington, Saldaña, Sigourney and Stephen Lang but will also bring Kate and Vin Diesel into the cast.
