12 Interior Design Styles You Should Consider Trying

Doing your own decor can be quite the challenge, and most people have never really had a go at it themselves. When you’re planning to completely reimagine your home, then you’re going to have to put in the time and research to get it right. A mistake could mean quite a big waste of money, and you wouldn’t want to have to go back on everything once you decide you don’t like the result. Play around a little before you decide to go all-in on a style. It might even benefit you to mix it up a little. It’s your home, and it should reflect your wants and needs for a living space.

Mediterranean

Mediterranean style is popular for many reasons, one of which is the atmosphere that it brings with it. It’s a decor style that’s typically found in countries that are on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Think of a more natural look to everything with less effort to have everything look neat and tidy. It’s far from minimalist and brings more colour and interesting shapes to your living space. With this, you can feel like you’re living on the coast in a much warmer country. It’s not for everyone but it certainly creates some positivity in the air.

Bohemian

If you’re the type that finds less is more to be more often than not incorrect, the Bohemian style could be for you. It’s very lively and focuses a lot more on being loose with your decorations. There’s a lot more creativity involved with the use of more colour and irregular furniture pieces. Nothing in this style is uniform, and you could call it perfectly imperfect. Like the Mediterranean style, it’s much warmer than other decor styles you can go with, and for many people that can make a home feel cosier.

Minimalist

For some individuals, having too much going on in the scenery can be distressing or overwhelming. Less can be more on many occasions, and a minimalist style proves that. You’re aiming to keep things looking neat and clean without too much colour popping out at you. It’s much less aggressive to the eyes and is often a very simple approach. That doesn’t make it any less interesting than other styles, and in fact, can take just as much creativity to make it work.

Eclectic

Sometimes going with one style isn’t enough, and you could appreciate the qualities of each of the different decors. Well, there’s really no problem with that, and there are many who have proved that a mashup of all of their favourite things can work just fine. Eclectic leaves no style behind and is perfect if you like to experiment with different things. You don’t have to tie yourself down to one thing and hope it works, you can make it work just fine with different items of your choice.

Art Deco

For those who are into classic art pieces, you might be aware of the Art Deco movement and what that includes. It’s a very interesting style incorporating a glamorous collection of geometric shapes. It’s very flashy, but at the same time quite beautiful. You wouldn’t see it as much anymore as you would in the 1930s, but it still holds up to this day. If you’re going to nail it, it would help to take inspiration from places that have done it before. It can be quite difficult to work into modern homes, as it was designed with older structures in mind.

Asian Zen

Not being from Asia, it might be completely new to you to hear about the Asian Zen decor style. Zen is a style that aims to inspire peace and mindfulness, which is perfect for a homely environment. Not everyone likes liveliness but still doesn’t want their home to be too plain or ordinary. Well, you can’t go wrong with a Zen style home, as it will introduce a completely new look to your living space.

For many people, this style will be quite new and out of the ordinary, so it can be a nice bragging point once you’ve got it finished.

Rustic

The modern look is evolving every day, but some people prefer the look of how things used to be, or how things look when they’re untouched by modern technology. Choosing a rustic decor is about embracing nature and its flaws and welcoming it into your home. You don’t have to cover up all of your brick walls with a coat of paint or plaster, and you don’t have to shut the plants outside. Seeing things as they have never been so appealing, and rustic is a great way to approach them for yourself.

Not every living space has exposed brick or wood to work with, but there are still additions you could make to your home to create that style for yourself.

Modern

Some people welcome all things new, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with keeping up with that times. A modern style shows off that you enjoy the finer and more recent things, and shows that your home is up to date. It’s perfect if you want your home to feel like it’s new. Generally, it’s a lot less colourful than something like bohemian would be, and instead relies on more subtle colour pops. Everything is much cleaner, without necessarily being as simple as the minimalistic decor style.

Industrial

As with many other styles, bare brick walls are very much a part of industrial decor, but that’s not where you’re leaving it. Industrial incorporates a lot of metal and wood into their design, to give you that industrial feeling. It’s quite a cold style, but that doesn’t take away from its appeal. When you’re going for an industrial style, you’re not trying to cover up those would be flaws in your home, you’re trying to match the rest of your home with them. Chic

Chic decor or also known as Shabby Chic is a style that incorporates the use of older and possibly worn furniture to create its own unique atmosphere. It’s very much in an opposite direction of a more modern style or minimalist and instead focuses on a more colourful and messier look. The goal is to make your home look elegant and tidy, without using the newest and best-treated furniture. It was a very popular style in the 90s, and many people are still recreating it in their own homes today.

Contemporary

Much like the modern style of decor, contemporary keeps a very clean and simple look about it without going too far into the minimalist side of things. The main difference is that while modern is quite similar, it has a different meaning to contemporary. It’s about things that are relevant right now and could be considered even more modern than the modern style.

French Country

Have you ever wished you could walk out of your life to live in a country house far away from your troubles? Well, French Country decor will help you to feel like you’ve done just that. Its eclectic nature allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds while still staying close to a minimalist approach. Consider it as a mashup of different styles, but still remaining quite muted and restrained in terms of colours and environment. You’re not decorating to feel in the now, but rather feel like you’re somewhere else.
