The 2026 EE BAFTA Film Award nominations have been revealed, with Warner Bros. Pictures emerging as the dominant force. Their two heavy hitters, “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners,” lead the field with 14 and 13 nominations respectively.
The literary adaptation “Hamnet” and the sports-focused “Marty Supreme” also secured a massive presence with 11 nods each. Notably, “Hamnet” landed a spot in the Outstanding British Film category. It faces competition there from local titles like “I Swear,” “Pillion,” and “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” all of which maintained their awards season momentum following strong performances at the 2025 British Independent Film Awards.
Divergence from the Oscars
While the BAFTAs often serve as a precursor to American ceremonies, there were distinct differences this year. The Best Film category features five entries that closely align with recent DGA and SAG lists, yet BAFTA voters opted for “Sentimental Value” over Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein.”
In the Best Director race, which allows for six nominees, Yorgos Lanthimos earned a spot for “Bugonia,” mirroring his Academy Award nomination. However, del Toro was again left off the list here. The acting categories, which also expand to six slots, provided a second chance for performers overlooked by the Oscars. Chase Infiniti (“One Battle After Another”) and Paul Mescal (“Hamnet”) both secured nominations after missing out on the Academy’s final ballots.
Historical Milestones
This year’s nominations also set new benchmarks for representation. Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” has become the most-nominated film ever directed by a Black filmmaker. Meanwhile, Chloé Zhao made history with “Hamnet,” which stands as the most-nominated film ever from a woman director.
The awards ceremony will be held at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, February 22, with actor Alan Cumming serving as host.
