BFI Film Festival 2026: Dates, Tickets, London Venues and Red Carpet Access

BFI Film Festival 2026 runs from Wednesday 7 October to Sunday 18 October, bringing new cinema, public premieres and filmmaker conversations to London and selected venues around the UK. For visitors, the first decision is simple: do you want to watch a film, see the red carpet, or spend a day exploring the festival?

Those choices involve different arrangements. A screening ticket gets you into the booked performance. A crowd-viewing wristband is for a designated red carpet viewing area. Free festival activities have their own admission instructions. Working out which experience you want before travelling will save time and avoid disappointment.

This MarkMeets article explains how to plan a visit to the BFI London Film Festival 2026, from choosing your venue to checking the latest access information. For other premieres across the capital, bookmark the MarkMeets London film premieres calendar.BFI Film Festival 2026 at a glance

What is the BFI London Film Festival?

The festival puts film discovery alongside its high-profile premiere evenings. You can choose a single screening, follow a particular director, or use your visit to try something outside your usual viewing habits. There is no need to fill every hour: one well-chosen film and time to discuss it afterwards can be a rewarding festival experience.

The BFI’s announced 2026 programme contains 251 titles from 88 countries, spanning films, shorts, series and immersive work. It includes 33 world premieres, 16 international premieres and 20 European premieres. These labels describe where a work is being presented for the first time; they are not a measure of how good it will be.

BFI Film Festival 2026 dates: opening night to closing gala

The opening and closing films bookend a festival that can also be enjoyed in smaller visits. If you live nearby, spreading your bookings across several days gives you more flexibility. If you are travelling to London, choose your priority screening before committing to accommodation.

Opening night: Elsinore

Simon Stone’s Elsinore opens the festival at the Royal Festival Hall on 7 October. Written by Stephen Beresford, it draws on the life of actor Ian Charleson and his preparation to play Hamlet at the National Theatre. Andrew Scott leads a cast that includes Olivia Colman and Billie Piper. The BFI has said cast members are expected to attend; that should not be read as confirmation of every actor’s appearance.

Closing night: The Debut

Jesse Eisenberg’s The Debut receives its UK premiere as the Closing Night Gala on 18 October, also at the Royal Festival Hall. Its story follows a shy woman drawn into a local musical production. The ensemble includes Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti, Halle Bailey and Eisenberg. Film credits and red carpet attendance are different things: use the latest organiser information when planning a visit to see a particular performer.

“Choose the film first, then plan the premiere around it. A red carpet appearance can change, but the reason to book a festival screening should be the chance to discover something you want to watch.”Mark Boardman, showbiz journalist and founder of MarkMeets

Where does BFI Film Festival 2026 take place?

The South Bank is a useful starting point, but the festival extends beyond it. The Royal Festival Hall, BFI Southbank and BFI IMAX are separate venues. Read the full venue name on your booking rather than assuming every event takes place in the same building.

The venue list comes from the BFI’s 2026 announcement. Curzon Mayfair appeared in the supplied draft but is not in that announcement’s four-cinema London partner list.

Is the festival at Leicester Square?

There are West End screenings, including at Vue West End, but the festival’s Royal Festival Hall gala red carpets are on the South Bank. Do not travel to Leicester Square solely because a film has a London premiere. The venue on the event listing determines where you need to be.

BFI Film Festival 2026 tickets: what do they cost?

General booking opened on 17 September. The BFI publishes £10 entry-level availability and £6 tickets for registered 25 and Under account holders, subject to availability. Listed standard prices differ by screening type, as shown below. Check your selected performance before paying.

What if the screening is sold out?

Check the festival homepage after 10am for daily releases. For BFI Southbank and Royal Festival Hall screenings, the published standby process starts at BFI Southbank 30 minutes beforehand, with tickets released 15 minutes before. Other London venues advise trying standby 15 minutes before the start. Availability is not assured.

Keep a second choice in mind before travelling for standby. It might be another performance of the same film or something at a nearby venue. That gives you a workable afternoon even if your first choice remains unavailable.

How to watch the BFI Film Festival 2026 red carpet

The BFI’s general crowd-viewing areas use limited, first-come wristbands distributed from 9am on the day at the Southbank Centre’s Belvedere Road entrance. Holders must return by the event-specific deadline. Wristbands cover viewing access only; watching the film requires a screening ticket. Source: BFI red carpet access instructions.

A viewing-area return deadline is different from the screening start and from an individual star’s arrival. Save the instructions for your chosen event rather than relying on a general London premiere timetable.

“The first thing to establish is which access you have: a screening ticket, a viewing-area wristband or a press invitation. Each serves a different purpose, and none should be treated as a promise of a photograph with a star.”Mark Boardman, showbiz journalist and founder of MarkMeets —

Accessible red carpet viewing and screening access

The accessible viewing area has a separate process. For 2026, places were allocated through a weighted ballot; applications ran from 9 September to noon on 25 September. That application window has closed. The BFI also describes waiting lists, so contact its access team about your current options rather than assuming the general wristband queue provides accessible placement.

For screenings, the BFI offers free companion tickets to visitors who need support and publishes details of accepted evidence. Its venue information identifies the Prince Charles Cinema as the exception to wheelchair and step-free access. Check the specific building and performance for your needs. The dedicated access booking number is 020 7960 2102. Source: BFI festival access information.

Be specific when asking for assistance: seating, audio description, captions, a companion place and a quieter waiting space are separate needs. Explaining the support that would make your visit work helps the team advise you before arrival.

What can you do for free at BFI Film Festival 2026?

LFF for Free includes activities such as talks, discussions and family events. Read each listing for booking and age requirements. The BFI says a booked free-event ticket does not guarantee admission, which remains first come, first served. Check free-event admission details.

A free event can be a good starting point if you want to sample the festival atmosphere before choosing a paid screening. Give it the same care as a cinema booking: check the location, arrival instructions and any restrictions before heading out.MarkMeets planning advice

Choose one priority event, save its booking or access instructions, and keep one alternative nearby. A manageable itinerary gives you room for queues, food and the conversations that make a festival visit memorable.

Planning your arrival at the Royal Festival Hall

Start with the journey you can comfortably make, then add a buffer. MarkMeets suggests aiming to reach your ticketed venue around 30–45 minutes ahead of the advertised screening time, unless your invitation specifies an earlier arrival. This is a planning recommendation, not an official universal admission deadline.

The BFI says festival screenings begin at the advertised time. There is also no formal gala dress code: wear something comfortable or dress up if you wish. Source: BFI visitor information.

Travel, clothing and the journey home

Compare public transport, walking and a booked car against your own circumstances. Public transport may suit a visitor carrying little luggage; a car may be useful where mobility or luggage makes the journey more complicated. Neither removes the need to check the final entrance and any event-day restrictions.

If you arrange a pickup, agree a lawful, accessible collection point with your driver. Allow for the film’s running time, any scheduled discussion and the time needed to leave the building. Avoid fixing a collection time from the film’s running time alone.

For clothing, consider how much of your visit involves standing outdoors. A coat, comfortable footwear and a compact bag can make a longer day easier. Keep your phone charged and save your confirmation somewhere you can retrieve it quickly.

A simple checklist before leaving

  • Match the film, date, performance time and venue to your confirmation.
  • Check the latest event page for access changes.
  • Save your ticket and any wristband return instructions.
  • Allow time for the journey between separate venues.
  • Confirm any assistance or companion arrangements.
  • Check your route home before the evening starts.

How to choose a BFI Film Festival 2026 screening

Begin with what you actually enjoy watching. A gala might appeal if you want the occasion of a public premiere. A smaller screening may suit someone whose priority is an uninterrupted film experience. A discussion can be the better choice if you want to hear how filmmakers approach their work.

Read the synopsis, running time, content advice and language information before booking. Leave enough time between performances to move venues and take a break. Two films on opposite sides of central London can make a more demanding day than three in one building.

Try making one familiar choice and one discovery. That might mean pairing a director you follow with a film whose subject interests you, even if the cast is unfamiliar. The aim is to come away with something to talk about, rather than collecting the largest number of bookings.

BFI Film Festival 2026 questions answered

Can the public attend?

Yes. The festival welcomes public audiences; you do not need an industry connection to buy available screening tickets. Follow the booking and admission process for the event you choose.

Does a red carpet wristband include the film?

No. General crowd-viewing wristbands and screening tickets are separate. Check both arrangements if you want to combine them.

Will the whole cast attend a premiere?

Do not assume that a cast list is an attendance list. Follow the latest BFI event information, and treat expected appearances as subject to change.

Do you have to wear black tie?

The BFI does not impose a formal gala dress code. Choose clothing that suits both the occasion and your journey.

Can you take part outside London?

Yes. Selected partner cinemas around the UK have festival programming. Their selection is different from London’s full schedule, so check the relevant venue before booking.

Where should you check for changes?

Use the official BFI London Film Festival programme for event and ticket updates. For premiere news elsewhere in London, visit the MarkMeets premiere calendar.
