Four Weddings and a Funeral lead cast almost 30 years on

Four Weddings and a Funeral is a 1994 British romantic comedy film directed by Mike Newell. It is the first of several films by screenwriter Richard Curtis and took $245.7 million at the box office and is a firm favourite with movie fans.

Four Weddings and a Funeral was, hands down, Hugh Grant’s breakout role. In 1995, he went on to win a Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical Golden Globe for his portrayal as Charles in the movie.

The actor’s natural quirkiness and charm scored him more rom-coms, such as Nine Months, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones’s Diary and Love Actually.

Most recently, the 61-year-old received praise for his roles in the TV mini-series The Undoing opposite Nicole Kidman and A Very English Scandal, which scored him Golden Globe nominations.

Off-screen, there is a lot of interest in Grant’s personal life. After a very public breakup with model Elizabeth Hurley, he went on to marry TV producer Anna Eberstein and welcome three children with her. The actor also has two children with his ex-girlfriend, Tinglan Hong.

It’s been almost three decades since Four Weddings and a Funeral premiered, but the beloved rom-com remains at the top of many viewers’ rewatch list.

The film follows Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell’s characters as they go from one wedding to the next and encounter one obstacle after another all in the quest to find love.

Let’s take a look back at the film’s cast (sadly, one star has passed away) as the movie celebrates 28 years this year.

Andie MacDowell as Carrie:

Andie MacDowell played Carrie, an American who attends a friend’s wedding in England and quickly gets engaged while in town. She then gets cold feet after falling in love with Charles (played by Hugh Grant), but the pair soon find their happily ever after.

Andie MacDowell started her career as a model but went on to become one of Hollywood’s finest stars.

She has appeared in hit movies such as Multiplicity, Unstrung Heroes, Town & Country and Magic Mike XXL.

MacDowell was married to former model Paul Qualley from 1986 to 1999 – he is the father of her three children, including up-and-coming actress Margaret Qualley.

The veteran star then went on to marry businessman Rhett Hartzog but they split in 2004 after three years of marriage.

Kristin Scott Thomas as Fiona:

Kristin Scott Thomas played Charles’ friend, Fiona, who secretly harboured feelings for him. Although he did not feel the same way, Fiona reveals her feelings to him during one tender moment in the film. But don’t feel too sorry for her – Fiona finds love in the end, with none other than Prince Charles!

Kristin Scott Thomas showed her range when she followed up Four Weddings and a Funeral with The English Patient.

Playing the role of Katharine Clifton earned Scott Thomas both a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination.

There were more dramas on the horizon with The Horse Whisperer and Random Hearts before she took some time away from Hollywood.

When she returned to the spotlight in 2001, she focused mainly on theatre, starring in productions such as The Seagull and Betrayal.

Scott Thomas, now 61, was married to French obstetrician François Olivennes from 1987 to 2005, and they welcomed three children together.
