The action-adventure sci-fi based on Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park dinosaur novels took in $204.6 million after premiering on Friday June 12 at 4,274 theatres. Box Office Mojo reports this is the second biggest weekend opening of all time, trailing just behind Marvel’s 2012 release The Avengers, which earned $207.4 million in its US box office debut. Director Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World was produced by Amblin Entertainment and Legendary Pictures. And it is the highest earning debut distributor Universal Pictures has ever had, with Universal’s Furious 7 having grossed $147.1 million in comparison.

“This is absolutely a four-quadrant movie and is working on so many levels. The release date was awesome, and everybody stayed off of our date,” Universal domestic distribution chief Nick Carpou told The Hollywood Reporter of why he thinks the picture was so successful in its first weekend showing at domestic theatres.

Jurassic World is not just making domestic box office history, as the film took in $688.7 million worldwide, the most money one single movie has ever taken in over a single weekend according to MARKMEETS.

Although fans have already demonstrated they can’t get enough of Jurassic World, it seems viewers have a lot more to look forward to. The movie’s leading man Chris Pratt confirmed to Entertainment Weekly he’ll be starring in at least one more feature in the franchise.

“I am. They have me I think for 38 movies or something,” he laughed.

Jurassic World also stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Vincent D’Onofrio, BD Wong and Omar Sy.

In second place this week is espionage comedy Spy, with earnings of $16 million. The Paul Feig picture, which stars Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jason Statham and Jude Law, has amassed gross profits of $113.4 million in its second week at theatres.

Finally, landing in the third spot this week is earthquake disaster movie San Andreas. The picture, which stars Dwayne Johnson and Paul Giamatti, took in just over $11 million in its third weekend at the box office. San Andreas has earned $307.8 million worldwide so far.
