Lionsgate has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the comedy American Ultra for $7 million. The indie movie stars Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg.
Nima Nourizadeh, who directed the surprise hit Project X, begins shooting in New Orleans next month from a script by Max Landis.
Eisenberg will play an unmotivated stoner named Mike, who lives with his girlfriend Phoebe (Stewart) in a small, sleepy town. One night, their lives take an unexpected turn when Mike’s past comes back to haunt him, and he becomes the target of a government operation set to wipe him out.
Anthony Bregman, David Alpert and Circle of Confusion’s Britton Rizzio are producing. Executive producers include Plamstar Media Capital’s Kevin Scott Frakes and Merced Media Partner’s Raj Brinder Singh.
Stewart and Eisenberg previously worked together on 2009’s Adventureland, which grossed $17.1 million worldwide.
CAA negotiated the deal with Lionsgate, while FilmNation Entertainment is handling international rights
