Prince William and Kate Middleton attend first screening of Top Gun sequel by Tom Cruise’

Prince William and Kate Middleton are used to the royal treatment, and Tom Cruise made sure the couple got a VIP preview of his new movie recently.

The actor treated the couple to a private premiere of the hugely anticipated Top Gun sequel, after learning the Prince, 39, is a huge fan of the original 1986 movie.

The Sun report that Tom organised a screening of Top Gun: Maverick for the couple, alongside some family members and friends at a London cinema, ahead of the film’s official film premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month.

Insiders reveal that Tom personally greeted the royals at the Top Gun screening, held at an IMAX screen off London’s Leicester Square so the royals could experience the action thriller on one of the UK’s biggest screens. Yesterday, Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe and Channing Tatum attened The Lost City film premiere in London.

The select group also included Sophie Wessex, 57, and Princesses Eugenie, 32, and Beatrice, 33 and a few of the couple’s close friends.

‘The rest of the cinema was shut to ensure privacy and William, Kate and a few other members of the royal family — plus a couple of very trusted friends — were the first to see it.

‘Tom welcomed them and said he hoped they’d enjoy watching it as much as he’d enjoyed making it, and left them to it,’ the insider continued, adding that former RAF helicopter pilot William was a huge fan of the sequel.

Tom reprises his role as Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in the movie which was shot in 2018 and 2019.

The film was originally scheduled to be released in 2019, but was delayed so producers could improve the complex flying sequences. It was then further delayed by the COVID pandemic, which shuttered theaters across the US.

The original Top Gun movie premiered 30 years ago, featuring a young Cruise as a reckless pupil Mitchell in the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School alongside the more mature Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards.

The new movie features Miles Teller as Goose’s son ‘Rooster’, who is following Goose’s path under the tutelage of Cruise’s Maverick. 

The sequel is directed by Joseph Kosinski with a screenplay by Ehren Kruger and Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie.

The original film launched Cruise to stardom and is often considered a staple of American action cinema in the 80s.

It was the highest-grossing film of 1986, earning $176million at the box office.
