Table of Contents

Johnny Knoxville. A name that has been familiar on most of our TV screens for as long as the early 2000s can remember. He loved doing wacky things in his daily life, which led him to sign a propitious deal with MTV for developing Jackass in the year 2000. Jackass quickly went on to become one of the highest-rated shows in the US and is what Knoxville is best known for.

Jackass is where it started for Knoxville – but not where it ended. He went on to land roles in big-screen productions that show off Knoxville’s comedy. We are going to run through some of the best Johnny Knoxville movies, so you don’t have to. By the end, you’re going to want to check these out for yourself!

The Movies

1.    Men in Black II

The men are back again for the second film in the franchise, and Knoxville is front and center for his role of Scrad. This was one of Knoxville’s big early roles, and he didn’t fail to disappoint. His character is a humanoid alien (Scrad), with a second small head (Charlie) on a stalk coming from his neck. He does the dirty work for the other evil character, Seerna. This role is right up Knoxville’s street, with hilarious gimmicks and one-liners; it is the perfect chance to see him on the big screen in a Sci-Fi film. The audiences love him because, in a lot of ways, Scrad IS Johnny himself. Citing him as bigger than Will Smith,  Knoxville really steals the show in this one.

2.    Jackass: The Movie

We couldn’t talk about Johnny’s most hilarious movies and not include his baby – Jackass. In his words, “It was probably the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. And it’s the show times 10. No script. No plot. Shot as half-assed as the show because we don’t know what we’re doing.” The guys travel around all the US, Mexico, and even Japan to bring even more insane stunts and laughter than they do on the show. Some of the most famous stunts from the movie are “Rent-a-Car Crash-Up Derby,” when the team rents a Ford Contour, which Johnny Knoxville then drives in a demolition derby event, before returning the wrecked car to the rental company. Or the famous ‘Night Pandas,’ when the guys dress up in ridiculous panda costumes and bustle around the busy Tokyo nightlife. If you are a fan of the show, the movie is a must-see!

3.    A Dirty Shame

With a slightly ruder twist than most movies, this one will make you see Knoxville in a brand-new light. A Dirty Shame is set in suburban Baltimore, where the highly-strung Sylvia Stickles (played by Tracey Ullman) receives an accidental concussion. She wakes as a lusting sex addict and is guided by fellow sex addict and ‘saint of sex,’ Ray Ray (Knoxville). Sylvia joins Ray Ray in his quest for the ultimate orgasm, which repulses the other Baltimore residents who attempt to stop the duo.

4.    The Dukes of Hazzard

This re-make sees Johnny playing the role of Luke Duke, one of the 3 cousins who run a moonshine business for their kindhearted Uncle Jesse (Willie Nelson) with their tricked-out car, General Lee. They learn that the evil kingpin Boss Hogg (played by Burt Reynolds) is evicting farmers to sell the land to a coal mine operation, and decide to fight back. With their cousin Daisy (Jessica Simpson), they set off on an adventure filled with women, cruising and fast cars. There may also be a catchy song or two that are more familiar than you think!

5.    Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa

Slightly different from the other Jackass movies, Bad Grandpa is a hidden camera comedy movie that will have you wetting yourself with laughter. Knoxville plays the role of Irving Zisman, grandfather to Billy Zisman-Muskie. The movie is a hilarious cross-country road trip that finds the duo encountering male strippers, beauty pageants, and other crazy adventures. To watch Knoxville in this movie is unlike any of his other acting roles. When speaking about his character in this film, he says, “there are a lot of mannerisms and things from my father, but mostly it’s just a more perverted version of myself.” In the make-up, accompanied by a little kid, it is crazy the things that you can get away with as an old guy.

Whether you were a fan of Jackass or not, there is something lovable about Knoxville. From his carefree attitude, or his ability to play roles that are so far from the norm, he captures every scene he is in. Knoxville has a long list of movies, each capable of letting you block out the outside world and laugh at something dumb. Knoxville says he never wants to ‘be mean’ with people, and after all is said and done, you can ‘hug it out.’ Knoxville’s movies might not all be for the faint-hearted, but underneath his bad-ass persona, there is a fun-loving guy under there hoping to make others laugh with him or at him, whichever you prefer.
