Simon Pegg: Star Trek movie will be like series

Simon Pegg says the upcoming Star Trek movie will “take it forward with the spirit of the TV show.”

Simon Pegg has revealed the new Star Trek film will have the same spirit as the original television show.

As well as starring in the upcoming movie – the third in the rebooted franchise – Simon is also helping to write the screenplay.

And speaking about the project for the first time, Simon said he is hopeful that the film will be able to honour the series, starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

“The film will take it forward with the spirit of the TV show,” Simon said.

He continued to reveal the plot will be “about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun, and that’s where we want to take it, you know. Where no man has gone before — where no one has gone before, sensibly corrected for a more enlightened generation. But yeah, that’s the mood at the moment.”

Simon also revealed just how he was approached to help pen the screenplay for the film.

The 45-year-old actor has gone from British comedy star to Hollywood star, with roles in movies such as Mission: Impossible.

And it was playing Benji Dunn in the thriller series that led to Simon’s writing role. He will pen the screenplay alongside Doug Jung, co-creator of TNT series Dark Blue.

“It just came out of conversations I was having with [Star Trek executive producer J.J. Abrams] and Bryan Burk, and they decided to kind of like restart the process,” Simon said, according to Comic Book Resources. “Because I’d been on the set with Burky on Mission: Impossible, he said, ‘Maybe you should come on and write it’ with Doug and Justin and him and Lindsey Weber. And I was a bit, ‘No. I don’t want to — it’s too much pressure!'”
