After all the fuss back in 2012 when George Lucas signed over the Star Wars franchise to Disney there soon came murmurs of a new film: Star Wars Episode VII.
It received a mix bag of thoughts from names such as Kevin Smith (Clerks), Kyle Newman (Fanboys) and Felicity Day (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Most notable of these was the future director J.J. Abrams who summed up his thoughts as “Thrillified”. Now with only a month to go we have so much to look forward too.
There have been many different releases over the last 3 years all of them building up what could potentially be the most anticipated film of the year. One of the first snippets was the inclusion of R2-D2, the original resourceful astromech droid, who has featured in the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy.
What made this even more fascinating was the tweet that announced that this friendly little bot was to be made by Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples, who are both members of the worldwide R2-D2 Builders Club (and huge Star Wars fans obviously). Not only did we find out that we were getting one of our own droids back but we were also shown the newest of them all: BB8. A spherical droid who appears to have the same good intentions of his older counterpart.
Anticipation continued to build as more and more was released espically when we were told John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow would be working along side some of the
original cast including Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker. To make this even more memorable, there was only one man who could be asked to compose: John Williams, who commented that he would ask the London Symphony Orchestra to perform this iconic soundtrack as they have done with the previous six films. To round off this almost perfect auditory experience it has now been released that this delight will be heard as a Dolby Cinema Experience.
Slowly more detail is released from Kylo Ren and his cross guard lightsaber to Finn Rock and his blue lightsaber, theatrical posters, individual character posters and even more trailers to wet our taste buds. Now in pretty much every shop you can find t-shirts, toys and every other merchandise that you could think of. Not forgetting the Star Wars Battlefront game which features the map Battle of Jakku – a battle that took place a year after the Battle of Endor where we see the crash site of a Star Destroyer. Even Google has given their own little Easter Egg when you search “a long time ago in a galaxy far far away”.
No matter how big a Star Wars fan you are, this is probably the must see film of the year. With some of the greatest actors and actresses, the promise of a truly breath soundtrack and as much hype as any film can have. What is left to say other than J.J. Abrams, please don’t let this suck!
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens will be in UK cinemas December 17th 2015.
