The four-piece made up of Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin revealed that they grew up in an area that really didn’t seem to appreciate musicians, so starting a band was a way to get them away from that.

Calum Hood explained to Virgin Radio that starting a band, for them, was something of an ‘escape’: “It was kind of like our escape from reality, really. Because where we’re from it’s not really cool to be a musician.”

The band’s drummer, Ashton Irwin, admitted that they’re all really excited about the success they’ve achieved so far and can’t believe that so many people support them by coming out to their shows:

“We’re still pretty surprised that people even come to see our band. We turn up at every gig going, ‘woah, people actually came? This is awesome.'”

The boys recently were asked:

What kind of gifts do you get from your fans?
Luke:
Most of my T-shirts come from fans.
Ashton: They’ve got good fashion sense! We always get a random few pizzas delivered to the house every now and then too.
Calum: They feed us, they clothe us; it’s like having lots of people taking care of you.

What’s the craziest thing your fans have ever done for you?

Ashton: We were playing at this house in LA and some fans found out where we were staying. They sent male strippers to the house.
Calum: We thought someone was trying to break into our house!
Michael: They rocked up to the front door and one of them was trying to peer in with a light.
Ashton: Then we looked closer and he was wearing really tiny pants…
Luke: He was very buff.
Michael: We also used to have a plastic dog named Ketchup in that house and as soon as we left the fans broke into the house and stole the dog.

Which celebrity ladies do you think look good at the moment?
Ashton: I’m a big fan of rocky girls. I love Hayley Williams and the lead singer from Tonight Alive. She’s really cool.
Calum: I’m a big Oprah Winfrey fan.
Luke: Ellen DeGeneres. I think she’s wonderful.
Michael: She’s funny. I don’t know. I just like so many people.
Ashton: Pixie Lott’s hot.
Michael: Pixie Lott is hot. Ariana Grande. There are a lot of hot people. Everyone’s perfect.
