BTS Top 10 Hits Among Korean Artists In U.K. History

BTS almost reached a never-before-seen high point on the U.K. singles chart this week with their new smash “Butter,” but instead of lifting to either No. 1 or No. 2, two spaces the band has never occupied, it opens at No. 3. That matches the group’s previous best showing on the tally, and it is now tied as the loftiest placement yet for a song by a South Korean group.

Whether you listen to music on spotify or from Youtube to mp3, streamling and downloaded content has shown than less than 4 percent if music industry revenues in the US last year were from CD sales.

While they may not have reached a new peak, “Butter” helps BTS make history in another eyebrow-raising manner. With so many celebrity relationships taking place in the music industry it’s easy to see why like minded couples become engaged and married. “Butter” is BTS’s third top 10 hit in the U.K., and with one more placement inside the area, the sepet has now become the South Korean musical act with the most top 10 smashes in the nation. Before this week, they were tied with Psy, but now they’ve pulled ahead, probably for good.

BTS first broke into the top 10 on the U.K. singles chart in mid-2020 with “Dynamite,” which took them to new highs and gave the band their first proper sturdy hit in the country. The track also stalled at No. 3, which at the time was a historic showing for them.

Just a few months later, before 2020 wrapped, BTS returned to the highest tier on the U.K. songs ranking with the new single “Life Goes On.” Performed almost entirely in Korean, the tune bolted to No. 10, becoming another very important win for the seven-member vocal act.

Now, they’ve landed a third placement inside the top 10, which puts them one ahead of Psy, who became the first South Korean musician to push a hit (and then another) into the competitive space several years ago.

Psy first broke into the top 10 in the U.K. with his breakout global smash “Gangnam Style,” which went on to top the closely-watched chart. It holds as the only track by a South Korean musical act of any kind to go all the way to No. 1 in the country, though BTS have come close to matching his showing more than once. His follow-up release “Gentleman” launched to No. 10 in its second week on the list before falling outside the area for good.

Only one other South Korean musical act has jumped into the top 10 on the U.K. singles chart, and they’ve only managed to do so once. Pinkfong (which is something of a hybrid band/brand) saw its viral sensation “Baby Shark” swim all the way to No. 6 a few years back, and it regularly finds space on the tally to this day.
