It’s that time of year when the magnificent purple cow packs her udders and prepares for the trip beyond the wall to the anarchic terrain of Edinburgh Festival Fringe, bringing to an end another hysterically, uproariously daft, fun and spectacular Udderbelly Festival.

But fear not – the enigmatic, sexy, swashbuckling, subversive drag queen next door – better known as London Wonderground – is going nowhere.

From July 30 London Wonderground is expanding, meaning more cabaret, more circus, more comedy, more burlesque, more food, more drinks, more unapologetically ass-kicking queer counterculture, more insouciant carnivalesque madness and more room in the magnificent prohibition-era-Coney Island-style bar to enjoy it all.

Leading the vanguard is the ultimate anarchic underground drag-punk movement, the comedy-cirque-cabaret sensation Briefs. The boys round off a summer tour that has taken them to Berlin, Paris and Glastonbury by returning to their spiritual home in the magnificent Paradiso Spiegeltent for more side-splitting, eye-opening, perception-smashing escapades from August 6 – September 27.

Among the other surreal and inspiring experiences on offer throughout August are The Double R Club, a black cabaret whose aesthetic of nightmarish mystery is inspired by the cinematography of David Lynch (1 August), a Cabaret Fantastique of international performers bound magnifiquement together by l’enfant terrible and Comte de Connards Marcel Lucont (5 August & 10 September) and La JohnJoseph throwing serious political shade in deliciously malicious diva manifesto Practically Royalty (August 15).

In September, witness the return of the renegade intersection between Vegas Cabaret Club and Blackpool Pleasure Beach with Miss Behave’s Gameshow, where the legendary La Clique and La Soireé hostess and her glamorous assistant Harriet take us through such show-stopping challenges as ‘Shazam that riff’ and ‘Porn I’ll admit to’ (September 4, 18, 25).

Also in town is burlesque superstar and creator of West End smash The Hurly Burly Show, Miss Polly Rae, with her latest creation – a heady mix of circus, comedy, cabaret all exploring the intimate side of burlesque, Between The Sheets: An Intimate Cabaret (July 30, September 9 &17) along with many more of the nation’s finest performers including dance maestros in Swing Out (August 3 & September 14), virtuoso musicians in Tubular Bells for Two (12 & 15 September), spoken-wordsmiths in Tongue Fu  (16 September) and cabaret legends in Lili La Scala’s Another F*cking Variety Show (23 September) and Siren (26 September).

All of this glorious live entertainment comes in conjunction with the opening of the Sideshow Wonderland tent which features a range of oddities and curiosities from strongmen to contortionists to sword swallowers, and the Barnum & Bailey Bandstand right at the centre, providing a top class range musical accompaniment and variety performance.

Completing the Wonderground experience is a sumptuous range of food and drink, in one of the most invigorating and atmospheric backdrops London has to offer.
