One Direction win at MTV EMAs 2014

One Direction were the big winners at the 20th annual MTV Europe Music Awards. Elsewhere Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé were amongst the stars walking away with awards.

The ceremony was held at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro, and was hosted by Nicki Minaj.

One Direction won the Best Pop, Best Live and Biggest Fans awards. The boyband accepted their awards without Zayn Malik, who was taken ill.

They were also named as Best UK and Ireland Act prior to the ceremony, as part of the competition to determine the field for Best Worldwide Act.

Grande and Minaj were among the performers on the night, who also included Kiesza, Royal Blood , Ed Sheeran and U2.

Host Nicki Minaj won the award for Best Hip Hop

Organisers revealed that 6,213 miles (10,000km) of cable had been installed to power the event, and a wiggery has been installed backstage to accommodate 500 wigs and 300 hairpieces.

Twenty two hairdressers and 40 make-up artists will assist the acts while 80 costumes have also been prepared.

The dressing rooms contain a number of treats, including a limited edition 10-year-old Highland single malt whisky from Glengoyne.

Meanwhile, each presenter and performer will be given presents including diamond and crystal jewellery, condoms, and SpongeBob SquarePants socks
