Singer-songwriter Sam Smith: ‘I mostly listen to music by female artists, I think I can relate to it better’
22 year-old star Sam Smith has revealed that music written by women tends to speak to him more and he was raised on female artists.
During a recent radio interview, Smith explained that he grew up listening to mostly female artists and he thinks it’s probably because he can relate more to the emotional nature of women’s lyrics:
“Growing up, I was listening to Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, and still to this day, most of the people on my iPod are females, which is odd. Maybe I can just relate to the music better.”
He went on to praise Mary J. Blige, who features on his single ‘Stay With Me’, and described her as a ‘legend’, adding: “Not only is she obviously a legend, but she’s the kindest woman ever. I love her. I want to spend all my time with her every day. She’s so sweet.”
The ‘Money On My Mind’ superstar has had a BIG week out in the US, between chat show appearances and gigs, and it seems the UK will have to fight to keep their favourite new artist in the country if the USA has their way!
Sam performed a huge gig at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York City on Tuesday night (17th June), and halfway through he was joined on stage by Mary J Blige for a surprise duet!
