Your wedding day is, quite simply, the most exciting day of your life – at least, the most exciting day that you get to choose. Embarking on a new shared life with the love of your life is a thrilling thing, and all the more so for getting to share the occasion with the collected throng of your loved ones. Excitement often gives way to nerves, though, and not just because you might forget your vows…
Inspiration isn’t an easy thing to come across, and yet the perfect wedding is invariably a marriage of tradition and inspiration. How else are you meant to communicate the uniqueness of your partnership without a wedding that suits you down to the ground?
If you’re struggling to find your flow, though, there’s an excellent font of inspiration to turn your eyes to: the big (or, indeed, small) screen. What follow are some of the most iconic weddings in pop culture past and present, with ideas and themes aplenty for you to borrow in your own nuptial celebrations.
Bella & Edward – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1
It doesn’t matter what your Letterboxd says; I know you’re a Twilight girlie in secret. Look, then, to Bella and Edward’s iconic wedding in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1! A forest wedding lush in verdant foliage, Bella resplendent in an ethereal bridal look… If you take nothing else from this melodramatic wonderfest, maybe take the outdoor setting as an ideal theme for a nature-inspired marriage.
Carrie & Big – Sex and the City: The Movie
The will-they-won’t-they of the 20th century, Carrie and Big finally (if briefly) got hitched in the Sex And The City movie – but not the way they’d planned… Don’t take any inspiration from the mess that was this doomed pairing, but do take inspiration from the collision of high fashion and low expectations in their impromptu courthouse wedding! A beautiful solitaire engagement ring, a stunning vintage white dress, and the most understated of venues – all to make you shine all the more.
Jim & Pam – The Office (U.S.)
For the (extremely short-lived) will-they-won’t-they of the 21st century, look no further than our beloved Jim and Pam. They’ve become practically the benchmark for every long-term relationship, so why not use their wedding as one too? Correctly predicting the insanity of their coworkers, the happy couple got themselves hitched secretly and in advance – on the Maid of the Mist. Eschew convention; get married at a landmark!
Colin & Araminta – Crazy Rich Asians
Crazy Rich Asians is a Netflix series of gaudy dreams – and an excellent font of inspiration for the glitzy wedding you well and truly deserve. Colin and Araminta’s lavish Singapore estate wedding in particular is a great place to start, with its opulent florals and bespoke gowns. Maybe give the drama a miss, though.
Rachel & Ross – Friends
Last and most certainly least, we come the ultimate TV get-together – Ross and Rachel. Their marriage is perhaps one of the best examples of what not to with your wedding, being a completely spontaneous, alcohol-fuelled and graffiti-faced debacle that frustrated the arc of their clumsy love. Unless you like the idea of getting married while Sharpied.
