If you are planning on moving to Canada to study, first off, good for you! It takes a lot of guts to leave the comfort of your own country and explore the unknown. There will be new people, new surroundings, and new horizons. The good thing is that Canada is ready to welcome you with open arms.
This is one of the most inclusive, diverse and multicultural countries in the world. There are currently 807,750 international students with study permits in the country, 30% of which are likely to become permanent residents after their graduation. Such is the infatuation with the country.
But while this is all very exciting, it’s important to take things slowly. The first thing you need to ask yourself is: what university are you actually going to study in? A lot of the time, we get so carried away with the move itself and working out how to get a Canada study permit we forget the reason we are moving in the first place!
Education is everything, and you need to make sure you contemplate all the factors when it comes to picking the right university. Overall, there are 97 to choose from, so it’s not exactly going to be easy. That being said, some are certainly more popular and recognised than others.
With this in mind, we’re going to help you with a little summary of the five of the most popular universities and why they might be right for you as an international student:
University Of British Columbia
This is a specifically good university for international students, with 33% of those enrolled having travelled overseas to study. It specialises in both healthcare and engineering, with masters such as business administration and arts – which are 2 of the most popular masters programs in Canada.
University Of Montreal
Montreal. The big city. Perhaps the most diverse city in all of Canada. It also has the second-largest university in the country, with more than 36,000 students pacing about its many corridors. It’s important to note the main teaching language here is French, so you might have to take a little crash course before you pitch over!
University Of Toronto
We’ve talked a little bit about the second largest university in Canada, well now it’s time for number one. This is essentially the “Oxford” of the Great White North, with a structured collegiate system in which 25% of students are international. It is a brilliant university that deserves all the praise it gets, but this shouldn’t be all about joining the best university, of course.
University Of Saskatchewan
Sometimes you want to go to a university because of where it is rather than just the amenities it can offer you. The University of Saskatchewan, in this way, could be the best option for you. Based on the east side of the South Saskatchewan River, this is generally considered one of the most beautiful universities in Canada. It’s also known for its role in tackling environmental, social and governance challenges.
McGill University
One of the other most popular universities in Canada has to be McGill University, which is also one of the oldest. It was founded all the way back in 1821, and since then, it has been nurturing innovative, brilliant students to go above and beyond. Today, it holds students from over 150 countries, with a particular renown for its medicine faculties and clinical subjects. Also, William Shatner was a graduate of McGill. So, clearly, it’s one you should think very hard about.
