5 Signs that a Bachelor’s of Engineering Is Right for You

Choosing a college degree is one of the most critical decisions you’ll ever make simply because it will dictate your career and, of course, your future. Now if you are to look at the job market in Australia, you’ll see that this country has a shortage of engineers. In fact, Australia is experiencing a ten-year high in engineering job vacancies.

But before you could land a job in this industry, you need to take up a  bachelors of engineering degree first. Here are five signs that choosing this degree is the right path for you:

1. You have a strong interest in math and science.

The field of engineering covers a huge umbrella of specialities that can be connected to other sectors. But if there are two things that unite all engineers, it has to be their love for math and science. Studying engineering combines knowledge in both areas, so it would be a huge advantage if you’re already interested in maths and sciences. Studies also suggest that students who are proficient in these subjects are most likely to succeed in getting their degree.

2. You are a problem solver.

As an engineer, your primary job is to find solutions to problems in the field that you’re in. If you think about it, some of the world’s biggest innovations came from solutions created by engineers. So if you’re someone who loves the challenge of solving different problems, then you’ll surely thrive in the engineering field.

3. You love to build things.

Engineers are mostly known to be builders. Whether it’s buildings, machines and equipment, being an engineer means having the opportunity to build things that would make a huge difference in the world. So if you’re someone who loves DIYs, inventions and just putting things together, then you should consider taking up an engineering degree.

4.  You work well with others.

While this is a necessary trait for any kind of job, it’s especially important when you’re an engineer since collaboration is a cornerstone of the engineering field. If you’re someone who enjoys brainstorming, sharing ideas and working with a team in solving problems and coming up with innovations, then an engineering degree is the right path to take.

5. You want to build a successful and meaningful career.

Let’s face it: we want a job that would pay us well and engineering can do that for you. In fact, engineers are some of the highest paid professionals in Australia with an average salary of up to AUD115,000 annually. That number even goes higher if you’re in specialised areas in engineering including aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, petroleum engineering and marine engineering.

The road to an engineering degree is not the easiest, that’s for sure. With the amount of knowledge and skills that you need to acquire before being called an engineer, you really need to commit to working hard every day you’re in school. But with the right institution, you’ll surely get that degree in no time.
