With the number of pockets that line its iconic wheel, Roulette has plenty of potential wagers for players to pick from. And they aren’t just limited to choosing a single number either.

Understanding the various betting options available in a game of land-based or online Roulette is key to getting the most out of a game. So, let’s take a look at the options available to players when they join a Roulette table.

Inside bets

The two main categories of Roulette wagers are split between inside and outside bets, depending on their location on the table layout and their general odds.

Inside bets are placed on specific numbers or combinations of numbers found on the layout. Chips are set either on the number itself or along the lines connecting the numbered squares.

These wagers generally hold higher payouts to match their lower probability of winning compared to outside bets.

Some examples of inside bets are:

  • Straight up – which is a bet on a single number, including either the zero or double zero slots.
  • Split – which is a bet on two numbers that are adjacent on the table layout, either vertically or horizontally. To indicate this, chips are placed on the line between the two.
  • Street – which is a bet on a row of three consecutive numbers on the layout, such as 13 to 15 or 28 to 30. Chips are placed on the outer edge of the row to indicate this bet.
  • Corner – which is placed on four numbers that form a square on the table layout, like 14, 15, 17 and 18. Chips are placed at the cross where the four squares connect.
  • Six line – which is placed on two adjacent rows of three numbers. In this case, chips are placed on the outer corner where the two rows meet.

Outside bets

The other main category of Roulette bets are the outside bets. These are found on the table layout around the central numbered grid, which is where they get their name from.

These wagers have a higher probability but offer lower payouts than inside bets as a result. They’re a more common choice for players who are less familiar with the gameplay of Roulette.

The outside bets are:

  • Red or black – based on which coloured pocket the ball will come to a stop in.
  • Odd or even – based on whether the ball will land in an odd or even numbered pocket.
  • High or low – whether the ball will stop in a number in the range from 1 to 18 or 19 to 36.
  • Columns – placed on any of the three vertical number columns in the table layout, covering a set of 12 different numbers.
  • Dozens – whether the ball will stop on a number in one of the three groups of 12 (1-12, 13-24 or 25-36).

Other options

If you’re playing a game of French Roulette then there are a few other betting options that players can choose from. Each of these cover specific areas of the wheel – such as the numbers adjacent to the zero pocket – and requires announcement to the croupier.

There are many options when it comes to placing a wager in Roulette. Whether you choose an inside or outside bet, consider their relative odds.
